Abstract The constituents of the extract obtained from American Upland cotton by large scale extraction with commercial "90% benzole" have been examined previously1. The method then used for extracting the cotton was open to three objections—(1) the heating was by the introduction of superheated steam, possibly causing therefore (2) concurrent saponification of esters present, and (3) the benzene was impure. The examination has therefore been repeated on the extract obtained by means of chloroform ...

Abstract The use of organic solvents for the extraction and estimation of fat, wax and resin in raw cotton and sized and bleached goods is discussed. The extractable matter is a complex mixture, and judging by the analytical characteristics of extracts obtained in various ways, no complete separation of the constituents is possible by solvent extraction. Hot chloroform appears to be the most inclusive solvent, whereas ether, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride do not easily remove the resinous matter. ...

We report here the extended use of the telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay for the detection of telomerase activity in fresh prostatic fluid obtained from anesthetized patients. Telomerase activity was detected in pellet extract and/or supernatant fluid of specimens obtained from 25 of 30 prostate cancer (PCa) patients (83%), whereas no activity was similarly detectable in specimens taken from 8 of 9 patients (89%) without clinical evidence of PCa. The positive predictive value (PPV) ...

Information on the structure of human casein micelles has been obtained from dissociation of bcasein (CN).Two approaches were used: cooling at 4°C and addition of EDTA.An initial loss of about 80% of the protein optical density occurred upon cooling to 4°C.Dissociation was time dependent, and at ≥24 h about 10% remained. However, mean size and voluminosity of micelles increased, as indicated by laser light scattering and viscosity measurements. This process was reversible, and 95% of the protein reentered ...

The Toledo Community Program for the detection of uterine cancer is described and an analysis is presented of the results, 1947–1963. The results indicate the success of a self-supporting community program conducted by practicing physicians from their own offices. The Program has encompassed more than two thirds of the women, 30 or more years old in Lucas County, Ohio. It has resulted in a large decrease in invasive cancer of the uterus. Survival rates following diagnosis of invasive cancer of the ...

Evidence has been reported that supports the role of hydrophobic interactions in the association of the monomers and in the dissociation of different phosphorylation levels of beta-casein (CN) from human casein micelles. Here, the role of electrostatic interactions in the formation and structure of human casein micelles was examined by determining the beta-CN composition of micelle pellets from milk samples adjusted in the range from pH 5 to 10. As the pH was decreased from normal (approximately pH ...

This paper considers possible diachronic explanations for the range of case marking patterns found in subordinate clauses in languages of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. There are two parameters to consider in comparing patterns across the area. First, complements and adjuncts of verbs in dependent clauses may have patterns of case marking different from those of independent finite clauses. Second, nominal suffixes functioning as complementizing case may occur either just on the verb of ...

Neurocysticercosis is a major cause of acquired epilepsy. Larval cysts in the human brain eventually resolve and either disappear or leave a calcification that is associated with seizures. In this study, we assessed the proportion of calcification in parenchymal neurocysticercosis and risk factors associated with calcification.
