Variable inorganic nutrient concentrations were used to generate silicate (Si) or nitrogen (N) limited conditions in cultures of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) harvested in the nutrient limited phase of these cultures was added to a natural bacterial community. Enhanced bacterial abundance and bacterial production were observed, in comparison to un-supplemented controls, when Si-limited (Si-DOM) rather than N-limited (N-DOM) diatom derived DOM or inorganic nutrients ...

An understanding of the origin of depletion in the high field strength elements (HFSE), Nb, Zr and Ti, relative to rare earth elements (REE) in arc lavas is critical to models both for magmagenesis in ares and for the relationship between are magmatism and growth of the continental crust. The presence of HFSE depletion in both are lavas and in the bulk continental crust constitutes some of the strongest evidence that continental crust is/was generated in subduction zones, especially if the HFSE are ...

CS Snyder, Eric A. Davidson, Pete Smith, Rodney T. Venterea,

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agriculture can be tackled by reducing demand for, and consumption of, nitrogen (N) inputs via diet modification and waste reduction, and/or through technologies applied at the field level. Here we focus on the latter options. Opportunities for mitigating N2O emissions at the field level can be advanced by a clearer scientific understanding of the system complexities leading to emissions, while maintaining agricultural system sustainability and productivity. A range ...

The cloning of promoter sequences of two invertase genes from potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is described. Histochemical analysis of series of reporter transgenic lines reveals phloem-specific expression from both promoters, with one expressed preferentially in internal phloem and the other in external phloem of stem vascular bundles.

The abundance and productivity of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in the region of Jones Bank (Celtic Sea) were assessed in relation to potential physical and chemical drivers of the marine microbial community during July 2008 on RRS James Cook cruise JC25. A major storm dominated the early part of the cruise; this influenced the microbial community with a decrease in diatom abundance being evident due to mixing of cells to sub euphotic zone depths. In the euphotic zone, phytoplankton was dominated ...
