Cathepsin K is a protease whose expression is driven by microphthalmia transcription factor (MITF) in osteoclasts. TFE3 and TFEB are members of the same transcription factor subfamily as MITF and all three have overlapping transcriptional targets. We have shown that all t(6;11) renal cell carcinomas, which harbor an Alpha-TFEB gene fusion, as well as a subset of the Xp11 translocation renal carcinomas, which harbor various TFE3 gene fusions, express cathepsin K, while no other common renal carcinoma ...

The BlrB protein from Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a small 136 amino acid photoreceptor belonging to the BLUF family of blue light receptors. It contains merely the conserved BLUF fold responsible for binding the flavin pigment and a short C-terminal extension of unknown function. We investigated the primary photoreactions of BlrB by picosecond fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. After excitation of the flavin the fluorescence decays in an H/D isotope independent manner with time constants ...

Abstract A remarkable feature of the human brain is its ability to integrate information from the environment with internally generated content. The integration of top-down and bottom-up processes during complex multi-modal human activities, however, is yet to be fully understood. Music provides an excellent model for understanding this since music listening leads to the urge to move, and music making entails both playing and listening at the same time (i.e., audio-motor coupling). Here, we conducted ...

Abstract Through long-term training, music experts acquire complex and specialized sensorimotor skills, which are paralleled by continuous neuro-anatomical and -functional adaptations. The underlying neuroplasticity mechanisms have been extensively explored in decades of research in music, cognitive, and translational neuroscience. However, the absence of a comprehensive review and quantitative meta-analysis prevents the plethora of variegated findings to ultimately converge into a unified picture ...

Wetland ecosystems have a disproportionally large influence on the global carbon cycle. They can act as carbon sinks or sources depending upon their location, type, and condition. Rehabilitation of wetlands is gaining popularity as a nature-based approach to helping mitigate climate change; however, few studies have empirically tested the carbon benefits of wetland restoration, especially in freshwater environments. Here we investigated the effects of passive rehabilitation (i.e. fencing and agricultural ...

The pharmacokinetics of cefotaxime, moxalactam, and ceftazidime were investigated in six human volunteers who received in a crossover fashion doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g of each drug by a 5-min infusion. Doses of 1.0 g were repeated after the administration of probenecid. Serum and urine concentrations were assayed with an agar diffusion method. Serum concentrations of moxalactam exceeded those of ceftazidime at all times and were distinctly higher than those of cefotaxime. The normalized area ...

Abstract Evidence suggests that the response of rainfed crops to dry or wet years is modulated by soil texture. This is a central tenet for certain agronomic operations in water-limited regions that rely on spatial distribution of soil texture for guiding precision agriculture. In contrast, natural vegetation in climatic equilibrium evolves to form a dynamic assemblage of traits and species adapted to local climatic conditions, primarily precipitation in water-limited regions. For undisturbed landscapes, ...

We describe the transition-edge-sensors (TES's) to be employed on the Spider experiment, a balloon-based observatory whose goal is detecting the imprint of gravitational waves by mapping the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The devices consist of Ti and Al thermistors in series sitting on a thermally isolated suspended membrane. Also on the membrane is a termination resistor coupled through a superconducting microstrip line to an on-chip, polarization sensitive, 150 GHz slot- ...

We are developing of arrays of membrane isolated resonator-bolometers, each with a kinetic inductance device (KID) to measure the temperature of the membrane. The KIDs are fabricated out of the high temperature superconductor YBCO to allow operation at relatively high temperatures. The bolometers are designed to offer higher sensitivity than sensors operating at 300 K, but they require less expensive and lighter weight cooling than even more sensitive conventional superconducting detectors operating ...

On the basis of the knowledge acquired from basic studies of several known arecoline derivatives about the structural requirements for potent agonistic activity and oral efficacy, a series of 1-alkyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxaldehyde-O-alkyl-oximes was synthesized and biologically evaluated in a battery of in vitro and in vivo assays. The most interesting molecules to emerge from the primary screening, 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxaldehyde-O-methyloxime hydrochloride (11, RU 35963), ...

Motor exercise, such as sport or musical activities, helps with a plethora of diseases by modulating brain functions in neocortical and subcortical regions, resulting in behavioural changes related to mood regulation, well-being, memory, and even cognitive preservation in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Although evidence is accumulating on the systemic neural mechanisms mediating these brain effects, the specific mechanisms by which exercise acts upon the cellular level are still under investigation. ...

A bstract We extend the anomaly inflow methods developed in M-theory to SCFTs engineered via D3-branes in type IIB. We show that the ’t Hooft anomalies of such SCFTs can be computed systematically from their geometric definition. Our procedure is tested in several 4d examples and applied to 2d theories obtained by wrapping D3-branes on a Riemann surface. In particular, we show how to analyze half-BPS regular punctures for 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM on a Riemann surface. We discuss generalizations of this ...
