Donald E. Broadbent, Peter L. Fitzgerald, Margaret Broadbent,

These experiments deal with the relation between the ability of a person to carry out efficient action in a situation, and that of the same person to answer questions about the situation. Existing knowledge on the topic has various gaps. In particular it is relatively common to show performance changing without change in verbal knowledge, but relatively rare to show changes in verbal knowledge without change in performance. A second major gap is in defining the kinds of task on which discrepancies ...

Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events and hospitalization for heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Using CV MRI (CMR) and 31P-MRS in a longitudinal cohort study, we aimed to investigate the effects of the selective SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on myocardial energetics and cellular volume, function, and perfusion. Eighteen patients with T2D underwent CMR and 31P-MRS scans before and after 12 weeks’ empagliflozin ...

Abstract Understanding how human modification of the landscape shapes vertebrate community composition is vital to understanding the current status and future trajectory of wildlife. Using a participatory approach, we deployed the largest camera‐trap network in Mesoamerica to date to investigate how anthropogenic disturbance shapes the occupancy and co‐occurrence of terrestrial vertebrate species in a tropical biodiversity hotspot: the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. We estimated species richness in ...

John Aldersey-Williams, Ian D. Broadbent, Peter A. Strachan,

Around the world, government policies to support new renewable energy technologies rely on accurate estimates of Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE). This paper reveals that such estimates are based on "public domain" data which may be unreliable. A new approach and methodology has been developed which uses United Kingdom (UK) "audited" data, published in company accounts, that has been obtained from Companies House, to determine more accurate LCOE estimates. The methodology is applicable to projects configured ...

Policymakers and regulators increasingly need to balance the requirements of energy demand, security and costs, and to do so they need accurate estimates of performance. This study uses public data to assess United Kingdom offshore wind farm performance to improve policy decisions. We find that average capacity factors have improved from 34.9% in Round 1 (2001) to 41.0% in Round 2 (2002) projects. Drivers and correlations of performance for United Kingdom offshore wind farms are analysed. The research ...

Background— Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging overestimates acute infarct size. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether acute extracellular volume (ECV) maps can reliably quantify myocardial area at risk (AAR) and final infarct size (IS). Methods and Results— Fifty patients underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging acutely (24–72 hours) and at convalescence (3 months). The cardiovascular magnetic resonance protocol included cines, T2-weighted imaging, native T1 maps, 15- ...

Expansion of the myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) is a surrogate measure of focal/diffuse fibrosis and is an independent marker of prognosis in chronic heart disease. Changes in ECV may also occur after myocardial infarction, acutely because of oedema and in convalescence as part of ventricular remodelling. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in the pattern of distribution of regional (normal, infarcted and oedematous segments) and global left ventricular (LV) ECV using semi- ...

Abstract Large screened cages trials were conducted to assess the potential of honey bees, Apis mellifera L., to vector Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) to canola, Brassica napus L., against the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois). The bees effectively vectored the inoculum from the hives to the crop. Conidia of B. bassiana was recovered from 100, 64–77, 70–82, and 47–83% of bees, flowers, leaves, and L. lineolaris samples, respectively, collected on four sampling dates in 2002 ...

Business process redesign (BPR) is a pervasive but challenging tool for transforming organizations. Information technology plays an important role by either enabling or constraining successful BPR. This paper explores the links between firm-wide IT infrastructure and business process change. IT infrastructure is the base foundation of the IT portfolio, which is shared throughout the firm in the form of reliable services, and is usually coordinated by the IS group. IT infrastructure capability includes ...
