Lorenzo Dell’Oso,

Based on Dante's declaration that he attended 'the schools of the religious orders' and the 'disputations of the philosophizers' (Cvo II. xii. 7), this article sheds light on the unedited disputations of a Franciscan theologian, Peter of Trabibus, in the Florentine convent of Santa Croce (1295–96) and analyses the information available to a layman who attended these disputations as an auditor. The article then argues that, beginning in the Vita nova, Dante resemanticised commonplaces contemporaneously discussed and cited in these ' ...

Chemical manipulations performed on aroyl pyrrolyl hydroxyamides, a new class of HDAC inhibitors previously reported by us, led to (aryloxopropenyl)pyrrolyl hydroxyamides 3a−g. Such compounds, showing better inhibitory activity against maize HD1-A than HD1-B (two homologues of mammalian class IIa and I HDACs, respectively), are the first class of IIa-selective inhibitors (fold selectivity: 7−78). They could be useful as tools for probing the biology of these enzymes and eventually as new anticancer ...

Recent evidence suggests that red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with mortality in mixed cohorts of critically ill patients. Our goal was to investigate whether elevated RDW at initiation of critical care in the intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with 90-day mortality in surgical patients. We performed a retrospective, single-center cohort study. Normal RDW was defined as 11.5%-14.5%. To investigate the association of admission RDW with 90-day mortality, we performed a logistic regression ...

We measured Hg concentrations in 37 igneous rocks from an arc crustal section and in 30 mantle peridotites from ophiolite, orogenic massif and xenolith settings. Mercury is heterogeneously distributed in the igneous rocks and shows a ‘nugget effect’, suggesting it is concentrated in a trace phase, likely sulfide. The abundance of Hg in the crustal samples varies from 0.9 to 8 ppb and correlates with S and Cu but no other element indicative of differentiation. The average of our data produces 2.9 ± ...

Noncompressible abdominal bleeding is a significant cause of preventable death on the battlefield and in the civilian trauma environment, with no effective therapies available at point of injury. We previously described the development of a percutaneously administered, self-expanding, poly(urea)urethane foam that improved survival in a lethal Grade V hepatic and portal vein injury model in swine. In this study, we hypothesized that survival with foam treatment is dose dependent.A high-grade hepatoportal ...

Intracavitary noncompressible hemorrhage remains a significant cause of preventable death on the battlefield and in the homeland. We previously demonstrated the hemostatic efficacy of an in situ self-expanding poly(urea)urethane foam in a severe, closed-cavity, hepatoportal exsanguination model in swine. We hypothesized that treatment with, and subsequent explantation of, foam would not adversely impact 28-day survival in swine.Following a closed-cavity splenic transection, animals received either ...

While there are many claims that abnormal breathing patterns alter facial growth, there are limited controlled data to confirm this. We evaluated forty-five North American Caucasians of both sexes, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years. Thirty chronically allergic mouth-breathing subjects were selected from a pediatric allergy practice, and fifteen nonallergic nose breathers were selected from a general pediatric practice. This paper presents the development and validation of a low-cost electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) system for the monitoring of process in soils. The ERT technique is capable of evaluating the distribution of electrical properties within a cross section of soil specimens by measuring the applied electrical current and monitoring the voltage distribution along boundary electrodes. This new ERT system consists of (i) a two-dimensional (2D) acrylic testing cell with strip copper electrodes, (ii) ...
