Two series of 36 and 24 guinea pigs were studied. Cortisone was given to a third of the animals, ACTH to a third and the remaining third served as controls. The administration of the hormones, in moderate or large doses, was started before giving the sensitizing injections of egg white, and was continued while they were being given and for varying periods after their completion. N treatment had any effect on the severity of anaphylactic reactions induced by the subsequent intravenous injection of ...

Summary and Conclusions The enhancing effect of adrenalectomy on anaphylaxis in rats has been confirmed. Part of this enhancement is caused by enhancement of the development of sensitivity by adrenalectomy which, however, does not appear to be due to an effect on concentrations of antibodies. Administration of cortisone, just prior to challenging, increased the resistance of adrenalectomized rats to anaphylactic shock although severe reactions still occurred. Administration of cortisone during sensitization ...

Peter Dews,

Pigeons working in a Skinner box developed different rates of pecking depending on the schedule of reward. When every 50th peck was rewarded (FR5O) the rate of response was high and constant. When the first peck after an interval of fifteen minutes was rewarded (15'FI) the average rate of pecking was low and there was a steady increase in rate through the interval. Pecking of the birds on 15'FI was markedly reduced by doses of pentobarbital which had no effect, or caused an increase in rate of pecking ...

Pigeons were rewarded with occasional access to food for 4-5 seconds for pecking a translucent plastic disc when certain environmental stimuli were present, but were never rewarded when other environmental stimuli were present. They came to peck at a steady rate of the order of 60/min. when the stimuli appropriate to rewards were present but at a rate of only about 1/min. or less when the stimuli appropriate to no rewards were present. When the stimulus appropriate to rewards was a red light behind ...

Pigeons were rewarded alternately for pecking when a red bulb was lit but not when a blue bulb was lit and then for pecking when a blue bulb was lit but not when a red bulb was lit. It has been shown that repeated rewards when the red bulb was lit led to greater frequency of pecking in the presence of the red light compared to that in the presence of the blue light, even when rewards were not given temporarily in the presence of either light. Conversely, repeated rewards in the presence of the blue ...

The number of responses made by pigeons in a fixed period of time is greatly increased by methamphetamine, when the birds are working under certain schedules (159 Fl and FR 900); but is only slightly increased when they are working under other schedules (19 VI and FR 50). It is suggested that, in appropriate doses, methamphetamine tends to reduce the number and length of inter-response times in excess of 5 seconds but that rather larger doses also tend to prolong inter-response times shorter than ...

Some behavioural effects of raunescine and isoraunescine on pigeons have been studied; no qualitative difference was detected between their effects and those of reserpine. Isoraunescine is between five and ten times less potent than raunescine, which, in turn, is much less potent than reserpine in producing these effects. Both raunescine (5 mg./kg.) and isoraunescine (50 mg./kg.) were found to cause a reduction in the concentration of noradrenaline in the brains of rats. Photodynamic therapy with aminolevulinic acid (ALA PDT) for oral leukoplakia has shown promising effects in regression of oral leukoplakia. Although ALA has been extensively studied and is an ideal photosensitizer, the optimal light dose for treatment of oral leukoplakia has not been determined. We conducted a phase I study to determine MTD and DLT of PDT in patients treated with ALA for leukoplakia. Patients with histologically confirmed oral leukoplakia received a single treatment of ALA PDT in ...
