Octopine dehydrogenase (EC 1.5.1.11) and lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) from the brain of the squid, Symplectoteuthis oualaniensis, were studied kinetically. Lactate dehydrogenase had a higher affinity for pyruvate (K m = 0.37 mM) than octopine dehydrogenase (K m = 0.86 mM), whereas their affinities for NADH were similar (K m values for NADH were about 0.01 mM). The affinity of lactate dehydrogenase for lactate was low (K m = 14 mM), whereas the affinity of octopine dehydrogenase for octopine was high ( ...

Abstract Pyruvate kinase (EC 2.7.1.40), extracted from turtle heart and purified to a specific activity of 210 µmoles of product per min per mg of protein, displays an isoelectric point of 6.05; its divalent cation requirements can be satisfied with Mg2+ or Mn2+, the Michaelis constant for Mg2+ being about 5-fold greater than for Mn2+. K+ or NH4+ can satisfy the requirement for a monovalent cation. Unlike the mammalian enzyme, the turtle heart pyruvate kinase shows an acid pH optimum (pH 6.3 to 6. ...

Abstract Phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11) occurs in turtle heart at a specific activity of about 19 units per g wet weight; Mg2+ or Mn2+ can satisfy the divalent cation requirement; ATP, GTP, or ITP all can serve as phosphate donors for the reaction. Although the pH optimum for the enzyme is pH 7.5, the intracellular pH of the anoxic turtle heart, pH 6.8, was chosen for characterizing the enzyme. At this pH, turtle heart phosphofructokinase displays hyperbolic saturation kinetics with respect to ...

High-resolution spectroscopy was used to examine gain characteristics of Cr-grating complex-coupled distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers near 2.4 $\mu$ m. The single-mode lasers contain InGaAsSb–AlGaAsSb active regions grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaSb. Modal gain was extracted from the measured amplified spontaneous emission spectra and compared with reference Fabry–PÉrot lasers. The material gain is similar in both cases, having a value near 1300 cm $^{-1}$ , while the internal losses are quite different. ...

To investigate the potential of a novel manganese-based magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent, EVP 1001-1 for the evaluation of myocardial ischemia.MR imaging with EVP 1001-1 was performed on 6 Yorkshire pigs, and T1 relaxation times were calculated. One animal served as a control, 2 were subjected to an acute coronary artery occlusion and 3 provided a model of chronic ischemia.Administration of the agent in the control and acute coronary occlusion model demonstrated a short plasma half-life (approximately ...

Ramzi Ajjan, Robert F. Storey, Peter J. Grant,
Despite multiple interventions to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the majority of people with diabetes develop macrovascular complications, and mortality following myocardial infarction remains unacceptably high [1]. Antiplatelet agents are used for both the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, although current guidelines are not consistent in their recommendation for the use of aspirin in diabetes [2]. In fact, there is little direct evidence supporting its efficacy ...

The largest known terrestrial impact melt sheet occurs within the 1850 Ma Sudbury Structure, Ontario. In order to evaluate the relative contributions of different target lithologies to the melt sheet, we have investigated the Pb isotope compositions of feldspar separates from early-formed quartz diorite magmas within Offset Dykes from around the impact structure. The samples define a linear array on plots of age-corrected 206Pb/204Pb versus 207Pb/204Pb. Samples from Offset Dykes hosted by the Huronian ...

This paper proposes an improved strategy for the optimization of dynamic photovoltaic arrays (DPVAs) utilizing the “irradiance equalization” (IEq) reconfiguration strategy. This type of reconfigurable array is already very robust as it amalgamates the flexibility of dynamic reconfiguration with the averaging ability of total cross-tied array architecture. This paper identifies four areas to further increase the power yield and significantly reduce the time for a return on investment. Results indicate ...

BackgroundThe optimal management of aspirin and clopidogrel therapy before surgery in patients with acute coronary syndrome is uncertain. Aspirin and clopidogrel within 5 days of surgery increases postoperative bleeding and reexploration. However, in acute coronary syndrome patients the risk of bleeding must be balanced against the risks of discontinuing the treatment and delaying surgery.MethodsFrom June 2002 to July 2003, patients undergoing urgent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) for ...

P2Y12 receptor antagonist therapy is recommended in addition to ASA for up to 1 year after acute coronary syndrome to reduce ischemic events. In contrast, the benefit of long-term dual antiplatelet therapy beyond 1 year remains unclear. Ticagrelor is a potent, reversibly binding P2Y12 receptor-antagonist that has been shown to be superior to clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndromes for up to 1 year. PEGASUS-TIMI 54 is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multinational clinical ...
