Hydrological observations are crucial for decision making for a wide range of water resource challenges. Citizen science is a potentially useful approach to complement existing observation networks to obtain this data. Previous projects, such as CrowdHydrology, have demonstrated that it is possible to engage the public in contributing hydrological observations. However, hydrological citizen science projects related to streamflow have, so far, been based on the use of different kinds of instruments ...

This paper introduces an FFT-based implementation of a fast finite ridgelet transform which we call FFRT. Inspired by recent work where it was shown that ridgelet discretizations of linear transport equations can be easily preconditioned by diagonal preconditioning, we use the FFRT for the numerical solution of such equations. Combining this FFRT-based method with a sparse collocation scheme, we construct a novel solver for the radiative transport equation which results in uniformly well-conditioned ...

Abstract We compared the feasibility of 4 cytomegalovirus (CMV)- and Aspergillus-reactive T-cell immunoassay protocols in allogenic stem cell transplant recipients. While enzyme-linked immunospot performed best overall, logistically advantageous whole blood–based assays performed comparably in patients with less severe lymphocytopenia. CMV-induced interferon-gamma responses correlated strongly across all protocols and showed high concordance with serology.

Abstract About 50% of all animal species are considered parasites. The linkage of species diversity to a parasitic lifestyle is especially evident in the insect order Hymenoptera. However, fossil evidence for host–parasitoid interactions is extremely rare, rendering hypotheses on the evolution of parasitism assumptive. Here, using high-throughput synchrotron X-ray microtomography, we examine 1510 phosphatized fly pupae from the Paleogene of France and identify 55 parasitation events by four wasp ...

Abstract Objectives Different computed tomography (CT) scanners, variations in acquisition protocols, and technical parameters employed for image reconstruction may introduce bias in the analysis of pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation derived from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish the effect of tube voltage, measured as kilovoltage peak (kVp), and iterative reconstruction on PCAT mean attenuation (PCAT MA ). Methods Twelve healthy ...

Abstract Although carbonyl iron powder (CIP) is an old material for magnetic applications (e.g. inductor cores), the structure of this material is still described controversially in literature. On the first glance a greyish powder exhibiting a spherical structure, CIP reveals on the second glance a nanoscopic crystalline sub-structure. The material itself contains carbon and nitrogen and its structure is described as an onion-type structure. However, the nature of the different shells and clarity ...

Perivascular fat attenuation index (FAI) has emerged as a novel coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-based biomarker predicting cardiovascular outcomes by capturing early coronary inflammation. It is currently unknown whether FAI adds prognostic value beyond that provided by single-photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT-MPI) and CCTA findings including coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS).A total of 492 patients (mean age 62.5 ± 10.8 years) underwent clinically ...

Objective: Positron emission tomography/computed tomography with 18F-fluorodeoxy-glucose (18F-FDG-PET/CT) has become the standard staging modality in various tumor entities. Cancer patients frequently receive cardio-toxic therapies. However, routine cardiovascular assessment in oncologic patients is not performed in current clinical practice. Accordingly, this study sought to assess whether myocardial 18F-FDG uptake patterns of patients undergoing oncologic PET/CT can be used for cardiovascular risk ...

Amygdalar metabolic activity was shown to independently predict cardiovascular outcomes. However, little is known about age- and sex-dependent variability in neuronal stress responses among individuals free of cardiac disease. This study sought to assess age- and sex-specific differences of resting amygdalar metabolic activity in the absence of clinical cardiovascular disease. Amygdalar metabolic activity was assessed in 563 patients who underwent multimodality imaging by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( ...

We investigated the accuracy of the molar mass (MM) and CO 2 sensors of a commercial multiple-breath washout device (ndd Medizintechnik AG, Switzerland). We identified humidity and respiratory exchange ratio-dependent errors that in most measurements resulted in an overestimation of expired nitrogen concentrations, and consequently, MBW results. Functional residual capacity and lung clearance index decreased by 6.6% and 9.9%, respectively. Despite improved signal accuracy, the difference in FRC between ...

Tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSC) are highly proliferative neoplasms that generally respond well to platinum/taxane chemotherapy. We recently identified minichromosome maintenance complex component 3 (MCM3), which is involved in the initiation of DNA replication and proliferation, as a favorable prognostic marker in HGSC. Our objective was to further validate whether MCM3 mRNA expression and possibly MCM3 protein levels are associated with survival in patients with HGSC. MCM3 mRNA expression ...

Background: Recent studies indicate that enhanced neuronal stress responses are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. A chronic inflammatory state seems to mediate this detrimental neuro-cardiac communication. Statins are among the most widely prescribed medications in primary and secondary cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and not only lower lipid levels but also exhibit strong anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. We therefore sought to investigate the influence of statins ...
