Geotechnical aspects of domestic on‐site effluent systems (septic tanks) and their impact on groundwaters are discussed and the limited relevant literature is reviewed. While there are few Australian case studies, the early stages of an ongoing study at Dodges Ferry, Tasmania, show a connection between shallow aquifer quality, number of residences and domestic on‐site wastewater disposal practices. Of 26 groundwater samples analysed, a number fail to meet established criteria for potable use. Most ...

Housing adaptations have been identified as an important environmental and prevention intervention for older adults, which may improve health and quality of life. The onset of disability in bathing can act as a warning for further disability in other activities and may therefore be a judicious time-point for intervention. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of conducting a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) of bathing adaptations, to evaluate whether they improve older adults' perceived ...

The onset of bathing disability for older adults has been found to be an indicator and potential precursor of further disability. Thus interventions targeting bathing may prevent or delay further disability and the use of health and social care services. The aim of this systematic review was to identify interventions targeted at reducing dependency in bathing for community dwelling older adults, and determine their content and effectiveness in maintaining or improving function and quality of life. ...

Introduction: The number of patients who have a pre-discharge home assessment visit following a stroke has been reported to vary nationally. The purpose of this research was to explore the factors influencing occupational therapists' decisions to complete such visits. Method: Semi-structured interviews were completed with 20 senior occupational therapists working with stroke in-patients, from a range of urban and rural locations in the United Kingdom. The interviews explored their views about those ...

Introduction: Occupational therapy interventions, such as home visits, have been identified as being resource-intensive, but cost-effectiveness analyses are rarely, if ever, carried out. We sought to estimate the cost-effectiveness of occupational therapy home visits after stroke, as part of a feasibility study, and to demonstrate the value and methods of economic evaluation. Method: We completed a cost-effectiveness analysis of pre-discharge occupational therapy home visits after stroke compared ...

Phillip Whitehead, Avril Drummond, Marion Walker, Ruth Parry,

There is a growing demand for services whereby individuals receive assistance from care workers for personal care within the home. This has led to the development of re-ablement or restorative homecare services that provide time-limited input aimed at reducing dependency in personal activities of daily living, and preventing or delaying the need for further homecare support. However, little is currently known about how such interventions are configured, or how they may affect individuals’ ability ...

Objective: To assess the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial of occupational therapy predischarge home visits for people after stroke. Design: Randomized controlled trial and cohort study. We randomized eligible patients for whom there was clinical uncertainty about the need to conduct a home visit to a randomized controlled trial; patients for whom a visit was judged ‘essential’ were enrolled into a cohort study. Setting: Stroke rehabilitation unit of teaching hospital. Participants: ...

Background: Little is known about day-to-day procedures in conducting predischarge home visits in occupational therapy. The aim of this study was to identify current practice in relation to people with stroke. Method: A questionnaire was designed and piloted; 184 were posted to stroke units in England. Results: Responses were analysed from 85 stroke units from 10 regions. The main reason for conducting visits was to ‘assess or practise activities of daily living in the home environment’ (93%), closely ...

Background. Bismuth is widely used for the eradication of H. pylori , especially in developing countries, although there are concerns over its neurotoxicity. Whether bismuth has to be absorbed in humans to act against H. pylori is not known. In this study, we compared “absorbable” (colloidal bismuth subcitrate) and “nonabsorbable” (bismuth subnitrate) bismuth as part of triple therapy in the eradication of H. pylori. Materials and Methods. A double‐blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled trial was carried ...

Monospecific antibodies to individual keratin polypeptides can be used to examine the tissue and cellular coexpression of members of keratin pairs. Monospecific monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies have been raised to keratins 1 and 10 using both crude cytoskeletal extracts and synthetic peptides. The tissue distribution of these keratins has been determined against a panel of freshly frozen normal tissues from humans, rodents and pigs. Epidermal expression has been examined in psoriatic plaques, ...

Disease-associated autoantibodies to basement membrane proteins have been used to characterize structural components of the epidermal basement membrane such as bullous pemphigoid (BP) antigen and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) antigen (type VII collagen). The autoimmune bullous diseases characterized by IgA autoantibodies to the basement membrane zone (BMZ), i.e. linear IgA disease of adults (LAD) and chronic bullous disease of childhood (CBDC) may have circulating antibodies.
