I. INTRODUCTION The burgeoning world of for-profit higher education has many different faces - many of whom were captured in a recent PBS Frontline investigation that is worth committing to print in some detail.1 One face is Michael Clifford, a musician-and-drug-addict-turned venture capitalist who has made his money by infusing failing institutions of higher education throughout California with private capital from investors. Frontline correspondent Martin Smith recently spent time with Clifford ...

Despite extant literature on a failed firm owner's coping, learning, and emotional functioning, very little is known about how once bankrupted B2B entrepreneurs rebound to venture again and develop capabilities like antifragility. Drawing on antifragility as a lens, we explore how UK B2B firm owners bounce back from bankruptcy and external crises to pursue successful ventures. Empirically, we examine the retrospective accounts of 20 formerly bankrupted UK-based entrepreneurs who overcame their adversity ...

As highlighted by several of the papers featured in this current issue of the Journal , psychiatric research and practice is dominated by a pathogenic focus on understanding the origins of mental ill‐health and developing interventions to prevent or treat psychopathology. The World Health Organization has called for a paradigm shift to move away from the almost exclusive focus on the absence of illness towards the promotion of mental, physical and social well‐being among those with or at risk of psychiatric ...

Abstract Some African countries’ premier industries, such as textiles, garments and agro-processing, which floundered in the face of market liberalization and stiff competition from cheap imports, are now going through regenerative changes, with some beginning to tell a cautionary tale of a leap upwards. Focusing on the Ghana garment and textile industry, we draw on a framework that integrates social practices and everyday general-purpose technologies to explore the rise, decline and regeneration ...

Eileen Yuk-ha Tsang,

There are significant numbers of women in China who have inadvertently married closeted gay men. Women in China who unwittingly marry closeted gay men are known as Tongqi (), and these women often discover their husband's secret only after giving birth to fulfill filial obligations. Shawn Anthony Robinson,

The purpose of this study was to describe my academic journey as a gifted Black male with dyslexia. The central research question was the following: What were some of the stories along my academic pathway that seem significant? The research design positioned me inside the culture in which I am the topic of examination. The research methodology used for my analysis was autoethnography, which allows personal experiences to be explored through the intersection between narrative inquiry and ethnography. ...

Selina Todd,

Abstract Between 1945 and 1967, England's town and city centers were reconstructed. This article argues that this process of civic redevelopment transformed working-class people's experience of urban life. Frequently represented as a social problem or simply ignored by prewar planning and political rhetoric on civic participation, working-class people were treated as vital to civic life in postwar England. This change had profound implications for people's experience of civic life and for class ...

Johann-Albrecht Meylahn,

The last few years the young democratic South Africa’s history has been characterised byservice delivery protests and industrial action which is becoming increasingly violentas epitomised by Marikana. Is the violence that accompanies industrial action and servicedelivery protests emblematic of a powerless frustration and a violent revulsion at the thoughtthat there will be no change? For 18 years, hope was placed in the idea of liberation which would open the doors to a brighter future for the majority, ...
