Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with gadolinium-based contrast agents is widely used for the detection of cerebral metastases with standard contrast agents. Newer developments in MR contrast agents have led to a higher relaxivity and/or concentration for these agents. To assess the effectiveness of a standard dose of 1.0 M gadobutrol compared with a standard dose of gadopentetate dimeglumine for the MR detection of brain metastases.27 patients with at least one cerebral metastasis ...

In this study we resequenced 1729 bp of the rabbit melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4 R) gene in 31 rabbits from different breeds/lines and identified ten polymorphisms: one was an indel and 9 were single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The indel and 5 SNPs were in the 5'-flanking region, 3 were synonymous SNPs and one was a missense mutation (c.101G>A; p.G34D), located in a conserved position of the extracellular tail of the MC4 R protein. The missense mutation was analyzed in a panel of 74 rabbits of ...

We report the synthesis and biological properties of novel inhibitors of the Na+,K+-ATPase as positive inotropic compounds. Following our previously described model from which Istaroxime was generated, the 5α,14α-androstane skeleton was used as a scaffold to study the space around the basic chain of our lead compound. Some compounds demonstrated higher potencies than Istaroxime on the receptor and the (E)-3-[(R)-3-pyrrolidinyl]oxime derivative, 15, was the most potent; as further confirmation of ...

Inadequate sun exposure impairs vitamin D activity and favors low bone density, especially in patients at increased risk for osteoporosis, such as those affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, sun exposure was investigated in a large series of patients with IBD in a Mediterranean country, Italy, where this risk is considered less likely to occur than in higher latitudes. This is a case-control study of 292 patients with IBD [132 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 160 with ulcerative ...

We investigate the structural, chemical, and magnetic properties on BiFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (BFCO) thin films grown on (001) (110) and (111) oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray diffraction. We show how highly pure BFCO films, differently from the theoretically expected ferrimagnetic behavior, present a very weak dichroic signal at Cr and Fe edges, with both moments aligned with the external field. Chemically sensitive hysteresis loops show no hysteretic behavior and ...

Condylar reconstruction and replacement using alloplastic materials currently attracts much surgical interest. The major challenge is to functionally reconstruct the anatomical region; this is crucial in terms of correct mandibular function. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of and complications experienced by a series of oncological patients who underwent computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) condylar reconstruction following resection-disarticulation ...

The inadequate dietary intake of Vitamin D and Vitamin K is an easily reversible factor favoring IBD-associated bone loss, but data on Vitamin K are lacking. A 28-item quantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered to 193 IBD patients (89 Crohn's disease and 104 ulcerative colitis), and 199 controls. Patients' demographics, clinical and laboratory findings were analyzed in relation to recommended daily allowances. VitD intake was inadequate both in the IBD and control patients (8.3 ± 4.5 ...

We report the study of anatase TiO2(001)-oriented thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO3(001). A combination of in situ and ex situ methods has been used to address both the origin of the Ti3+-localized states and their relationship with the structural and electronic properties on the surface and the subsurface. Localized in-gap states are analyzed using resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and are related to the Ti3+ electronic configuration, homogeneously distributed over the ...

Differential resistance measurements performed by a standard modulation technique exhibits structures which can be related to the energy gap of BiSCCO. Features of the derivative plots are discussed in connection with models proposed previously for similar junctions. Nb-Nb PCJs based on sintered pellets of granular ...

The proportional regime of a double superconducting tunnel junction detector is described in terms of the diffusion equation of the nonequilibrium quasiparticles excited in the absorber by the impinging radiation. The expression of the output current signals through the junctions is obtained. Some numerical results are shown and discussed also in connection with the operation of the detector in the charge collection mode.

Abstract The High-energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01)—launched on 2018 February 2—is a light and compact payload suitable for measuring electrons (3–100 MeV), protons (30–250 MeV), and light nuclei (up to a few hundreds of MeV). The Sun-synchronous orbit and large acceptance allow HEPD to measure cosmic-ray particles near the ±65° latitude limit for a fair amount of time per day. In this work, three semiannual galactic hydrogen energy spectra between ∼ ...

X-ray STJ detector response is analyzed in the framework of the kinetic transport equation for the non-equilibrium quasi-particles. Numerical solutions of the resulting equation which describes the diffusion of excitations in the plane of the junction are presented and discussed. A particular attention is paid to the limits of “small” and “large” junctions, with respect to the effective diffusion length of quasi-particles. An almost linear behaviour is expected, under suitable conditions, for “large” ...

In the limit of low temperatures, the only effective processes which involve quasi-particles and phonons are the phonon scattering mechanisms and the phonon escape from the area of the detector. Perhydrotriphenylene (PHTP) has been extensively applied as a matrix in which a solid-state radical polymerization promoted by γ rays can be performed; in some instances the irradiated matrix itself acts as an initiator onto the included monomer. The e.s.r. spectrum of PHTP was resolved in its components due to two overlapping radicals, by exploiting their differing relaxation times. The main radical, stable under vacuum for a long time, was interpreted as the tertiary one and the conformation was ...

Interactions of superconducting nanostructures with external optical radiation represent a very interesting topic in both the framework of nonequilibrium physics and photodetector applications. Heterogeneous nano-layers, such as proximized superconductor/normal metal and superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers, are very promising since they exhibit the ultrafast Cooper-pair and quasiparticle dynamics.
