Endovascular renal denervation reduces blood pressure in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension, but its efficacy in patients with true resistant hypertension has not been shown. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of endovascular ultrasound renal denervation in patients with hypertension resistant to three or more antihypertensive medications. In a randomised, international, multicentre, single-blind, sham-controlled trial done at 28 tertiary centres in the USA and 25 in Europe, we included ...

Background Early studies suggest that radiofrequency-based renal denervation reduces blood pressure in patients with moderate hypertension. We investigated whether an alternative technology using endovascular ultrasound renal denervation reduces ambulatory blood pressure in patients with hypertension in the absence of antihypertensive medications. Methods RADIANCE-HTN SOLO was a multicentre, international, single-blind, randomised, sham-controlled trial done at 21 centres in the USA and 18 in Europe. ...

New Monte Carlo results of phase diagrams in f.c.c. binary alloys are shown. In particular, when only nearest-neighbour (nn) interactions exist, we find the triple point at a finite temperature, providing a definite answer to the long-standing controversy about its location. A new, spin-glass–like phase is found when competing next nn interactions are included.

The rise of high throughput (HT) strain engineering tools accompanying the area of synthetic biology is supporting the generation of a large number of microbial cell factories. A current bottleneck in process development is our limited capacity to rapidly analyze the metabolic state of the engineered strains, and in particular their intracellular fluxes. HT 13C-fluxomics workflows have not yet become commonplace, despite the existence of several HT tools at each of the required stages. This includes ...

MICROSCOPE is a French Space Agency mission that aims to test the Weak Equivalence Principle in space down to an accuracy of $10^{-15}$. This is two orders of magnitude better than the current constraints, which will allow us to test General Relativity as well as theories beyond General Relativity which predict a possible Weak Equivalence Principle violation below $10^{-13}$. In this communication, we describe the MICROSCOPE mission, its measurement principle and instrument, and we give an update ...

Meiosis, the basis of sex, evolved through iterative gene duplications. To understand whether subsequent duplications have further enriched the core meiotic "tool-kit," we investigated the fate of meiotic gene duplicates following whole genome duplication (WGD), a common occurrence in eukaryotes. We show that meiotic genes return to a single copy more rapidly than genome-wide average in angiosperms, one of the lineages in which WGD is most vividly exemplified. The rate at which duplicates are lost ...

In crustaceans, the androgenic gland (AG), thanks to the synthesis of the androgenic gland hormone (AGH), controls the differentiation of the primary and secondary male sexual characters. In this study, we amplified 12 new AGH cDNAs in species belonging to five different families of the infra-order Ligiamorpha of terrestrial isopods. Putative essential amino acids for the production of a functional AGH protein exhibit signatures of negative selection and are strictly conserved including typical proteolytic ...

Activation of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells by treatment with their α-galactosyl ceramide ligand provides therapeutic benefits in several immune inflammatory settings. Given the artificial nature of this stimulation, the natural regulatory functions of iNKT remain uncertain. Addressing this issue in a mouse model of innate-cell-driven lung inflammation induced by the cytokine/alarmin IL-33 that targets iNKT cells, we found that eosinophil and neutrophil recruitment was markedly increased ...

Regular and moderate wine consumption is one of the explanations suggested for the lower incidence of cardiovascular events in France compared with other industrialized countries. We evaluated whether alcohol alone or combined with red wine polyphenols reduced plaque size and/or attenuated thrombotic reactivity at the site of advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Red wine extract, or purified (+)-catechin with alcohol, or alcohol alone, was added for 12 weeks to the drinking water of apoE-deficient (apoE(-/-)) ...

Surface diffraction of X-rays at the air/water interface is now becoming a tool for numerous systems, ranging from simple amphiphiles to large molecules like C60. In the past year, several original studies were conducted on the role of chirality in 2D. The quality of the synchotron beams now allows the observation of short-range order, as well as highly ordered protein crystals having large unit cells.

Abstract The anti‐initiating properties of allyl sulfides on rat liver carcinogenesis induced by N‐nitroso‐diethylamine (NDEA) or aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were evaluated by using a three‐step medium‐term hepatocarcinogenesis assay. Diallyl sulfide (DAS) or diallyl disulfide (DADS) was added to the diet of rats (2 g/kg) for three weeks, during which NDEA or AFB1 was administered by intraperitoneal injection. The rats were submitted later to eight days of 2‐acetylaminofluorene administration and to two‐thirds ...

In Section 1, we survey the existence theorems for a kernel; in Section 2, we discuss a new conjecture which could constitute a bridge between the kernel problems and the perfect graph conjecture. In fact, we believe that a graph is 'quasi-perfect' if and only if it is perfect.

Acetylcholinesterase is a key component of cholinergic neurotransmission. In Drosophila melanogaster, acetylcholinesterase is encoded by the Ace locus. We have determined the complete organization of the locus. The transcription unit is 34 kb (1 kb = 103 bases) long and encompasses ten exons. We have mapped the 5′ end of the transcript, sequenced all the intron/exon boundaries, as well as the 3′ end of the transcript. The deduced mature transcript is 4291 nucleotides long without poly(A). Sequencing ...

Microsomal cytochrome P450-dependent lauric acid hydroxylase activities were characterized in liver, kidney, and intestinal mucosa of the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Microsomes from these organs generated (ω-1)-hydroxylauric acid and a mixture of positional isomers including (ω)-, (ω-2)-, (ω-3)- and (ω-4)-hydroxylauric acids, which were identified by RP-HPLC and GC-MS analysis. Peroxisome proliferators, such as clofibrate and especially di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, increased kidney microsomal lauric ...

It has been suggested that hormonally controlled submandibular salivary gland (SSG) development and secretions may be affected by endocrine disruptor compounds. We investigated the effects of oral gestation-lactation exposure to 1 mg/kg body weight daily dose of the estrogenic soy-isoflavone genistein and/or the anti-androgenic food contaminant vinclozolin in female rats. The SSGs of female offspring were collected at postnatal day 35 to study gland morphogenesis and mRNA expression of sex-hormone ...

17β-Estradiol (E2) regulates estrogen receptor-α (ERα) target gene transcription through the two independent activation functions (AFs), AF1 and AF2, located in the N-terminal and ligand binding domain of ERα, respectively. We previously reported that ERα is required for the E2 atheroprotective action as well as for its accelerative action on endothelial healing, but its AF1 function is dispensable. Here, we investigated the role of ERαAF2 in these two major beneficial actions of E2 by electively targeting ...
