There is an urgent need for safe and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) for human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) infection. We undertook the first clinical trial of a single-tablet regimen containing elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (E/C/F/TDF) to assess its effectiveness in HIV-2-infected individuals in Senegal, West Africa.HIV-2-infected, ART-naive adults with World Health Organization stage 3-4 disease or CD4 count <750 cells/μL were eligible for ...

This is a study of the effect of social engagement on responsible tourist behaviour. We also examine the mediating role of responsible public management of tourism, involvement in responsible tourism and the ecological orientation of tourism. This research is based on an overall sample of 656 respondents. Our research hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. The results reveal a direct positive effect of social engagement on responsible behaviour among tourists. Involvement in ...

An original numerical modelling of Mode Stirred Reverberation Chamber used in Electromagnetic Compatibility is proposed. This method relies on an analogy between a reverberation chamber and an enclosure whose walls' conductivity is randomly characterised. The distribution law of this parameter is obtained by measurements. Applying a stochastic collocation method enables one to numerically assess electromagnetic field from a low number of empty cavity (without stirrer) simulations. Thus this approach ...

The evaluation of human immune responses to arthropod bites may be a useful marker of exposure to vector-borne diseases, with applications to malaria, the most serious parasitic infection in humans. The specific antibody (Ab) IgG response to saliva obtained from Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes was evaluated in young children from an area of seasonal malaria transmission in Senegal. Specific IgG was higher in children who developed clinical Plasmodium falciparum malaria within the 3 months that followed ...

Owing to their low toxicity, low price, and ease of use, efavirenz (EFV) and nevirapine (NVP) are frequently used as part of antiretroviral regimens for AIDS treatment. Several clinical trials have already studied their efficacy and tolerance. However, long-term observations of the effects of these drugs in patients are limited. We used data from a prospective Senegalese cohort to analyze long-term tolerance and efficacy of these two drugs in a low-resources setting. Patients were included if they ...

Endovascular renal denervation reduces blood pressure in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension, but its efficacy in patients with true resistant hypertension has not been shown. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of endovascular ultrasound renal denervation in patients with hypertension resistant to three or more antihypertensive medications. In a randomised, international, multicentre, single-blind, sham-controlled trial done at 28 tertiary centres in the USA and 25 in Europe, we included ...

Aim: To assess the effectiveness of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) used as an indirect pulp-capping material in human molar and premolar teeth. Methodology: We conducted a clinical evaluation of 60 teeth, which underwent an indirect pulp-capping procedure with either MTA or calcium hydroxide cement (Dycal®). Calcium hydroxide was compared with MTA and the thickness of the newly formed dentine was measured at regular time intervals. The follow-up was at 3 and 6 months, and dentine formation was monitored ...

Here J0 is the complex Jacobian of 0 [7; p. 11], hence J0 is holomorphic, |/0 1 is subharmonic and of course positive, and its integral over C is therefore infinite. Let B be the open unit ball of C. Thus rB is the ball of radius r, centered at 0. The preceding paragraph shows that vol (Qr\rB} must tend to oo as r— >oo, whenever Q is F.B. Theorem 1 of the present paper shows that this can happen arbitrarily slowly. We became interested in vol (Qr\rB) because we wanted to know (we still don't) whether there ...

My interest in this story came from the Gaston Julia side. Even if no biography has been devoted to him, there is much to read about his life. An image of his childhood and his brilliant schooling, then of his second birth (in his own words) after his 1915 war wound, an image which was polished by himself, is given by the many speeches he delivered or that were addressed to him through the 20th century (see [Julia 1970]). What he said, what he did not say, where he said it, when he said it, who addressed ...

Plasma N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and R wave in aVL lead (RaVL) have been associated with mortality in hypertension. The aim of the current study was to compare the prognostic value of their combination to that of the left ventricular mass index (LVMI) assessed by echocardiography.A total of 1104 hypertensive patients who had at baseline an assessment of plasma NT-proBNP, a 12-lead ECG, and echocardiography were included. The activity of lenacapavir against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has been extensively evaluated in vitro, but comparable data for human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) are scarce. We determined the anti-HIV-2 activity of lenacapavir using single-cycle infections of MAGIC-5A cells and multicycle infections of a T-cell line. Lenacapavir exhibited low-nanomolar activity against HIV-2, but was 11- to 14-fold less potent against HIV-2 in comparison to HIV-1. Mutations in HIV-2 that ...

Hepatitis B (HB) infection is common in Mali. However, there is little information on molecular and biochemical characteristics of HB carriers. A group of 1466 adult volunteers was recruited in the district of Bamako. Confirmed HB carriers were tested for HB viral load by quantitative PCR and HBV was genotyped by sequencing of HBS. Fibrosis and hepatitis activity were measured using the Fibrotest-Actitest. A mutation of TP53 at codon 249 (R249S), specific for exposure to aflatoxin, was detected in ...

Abstract Background Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common intraocular primary malignancy in children. In industrialised countries, the cure rate is about 95%. We present the results of a prospective study on the management of Rb in the paediatric oncology unit of Gabriel Touré Teaching Hospital and African Institute of Tropical Ophthalmology, from November 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015. Procedure The aims of this prospective study were to evaluate the treatment of localised Rb, ocular prosthesis ...

The aim of the present study was to determine appropriate tenofovir-based regimens meriting evaluation in large-scale randomized trials among sub-Saharan African patients. This was a randomized open-label 96-week prospective pilot study evaluating four first-line regimens: tenofovir/emtricitabine/nevirapine (group 1), tenofovir/lopinavir/ritonavir (group 2), tenofovir/emtricitabine/zidovudine (group 3) and tenofovir/emtricitabine/efavirenz (group 4) in antiretroviral-naive, HIV-1-infected patients in ...

Abstract Objectives An open-label randomized trial (DAYANA) was conducted in sub-Saharan settings to evaluate four different regimens containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate as first-line treatment for HIV infection. The objectives of the present substudy were to assess the relationship between trough concentrations of tenofovir in plasma collected after 24 h (C24) and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) calculated by the different formulae that are available. Methods The criteria for eligibility ...
