The electronic structure of the spinel compound Li4Ti5O12, used as anode material in Li-ion batteries, is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The local environment of tin, titanium, iron, and sulfur in spinel compounds Cu2FeSn3S8 and Cu2FeTi3S8 was studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the titanium, iron, sulfur K edges, and the tin LI-edge. The spinel Li4Ti5O12, a stable phase of the Li2O–TiO2 system, allows to insert three Li atoms per formula unit at a potential of 1.5 V on the basis of a spinel ↔ NaCl phase transition. This mechanism leads to a reduction of three Ti(IV) atoms out of five, corresponding to a theoretical capacity of 175 mAh/g. Tin-doped anatase TiO(2) nanopowders and nanoceramics with particle sizes between 12 and 30 nm are investigated by X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Furthermore, ab initio calculations based on the density functional theory are performed to analyze changes in the electronic structure due to Sn doping. The electronic structures of SnS and SnS 2 have been investigated from first principles calculations to provide a full analysis of the valence and conduction bands. A good agreement with experimental X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), S Kβ X‐ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at S K, Sn L 1 and Sn L 3 edges is found and the main features of the spectra are analysed in terms of chemical bonding.
