Leo Steinberg,

The Christ in Michelangelo's Florentine Pietà (Fig. 1) is short one leg, and yet the missing limb is rarely missed, so well does the figure in its truncated state seem to work. Some even regard the lack of the other leg as an aesthetic gain.1 It is to those who take this position or who for any reason whatever deplore the attempt to put back what Michelangelo had removed that I offer this consideration: Michelangelo certainly did not conceive a Christ with amputations. He planned a whole, and whatever ...

This paper proposes a passive vibration isolator methodology based on inerters for improving the performance of the famous statue of Michelangelo Buonarroti. More specifically, the five-degree-of-freedom (5DOF) model of the statue based on experimental tests has been presented. Using this developed model, the impact of actuation devices such as tuned mass-damper (TMD) and tuned mass-damper-inerter (TMDI) in vibration reduction of this structure is investigated. Then, the effect of TMDI on the 5DOF ...

J. Abouaf,

The statue was thought to be for the artist's tomb. Two years after he had stopped working on the unfinished piece, Michelangelo attacked the statue with a sledgehammer. Only the ...
