The large and still increasing popularity of deep learning clashes with a major limit of neural network architectures, that consists in their lack of capability in providing human-understandable motivations of their decisions. In situations in which the machine is expected to support the decision of human experts, providing a comprehensible explanation is a feature of crucial importance. The language used to communicate the explanations must be formal enough to be implementable in a machine and ...

Within the GEN-COVID Multicenter Study, biospecimens from more than 1000 SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals have thus far been collected in the GEN-COVID Biobank (GCB). Sample types include whole blood, plasma, serum, leukocytes, and DNA. The GCB links samples to detailed clinical data available in the GEN-COVID Patient Registry (GCPR). It includes hospitalized patients (74.25%), broken down into intubated, treated by CPAP-biPAP, treated with O

In-flight ice accretion under parametric uncertainty is investigated. Three test cases are presented that reproduce experiments carried out at the NASA's Glenn Icing Research Tunnel facility. A preliminary accuracy assessment, achieved by comparing numerical predictions against experimental observations, confirms the robustness and the predictiveness of the computerized icing model. Besides, sensitivity analyses highlight the variance of the targeted outputs with respect to the different uncertain ...

Abstract Background Timely recognition of malignant melanoma (MM) is challenging for dermatologists worldwide and represents the main determinant for mortality. Dermoscopic examination is influenced by dermatologists' experience and fails to achieve adequate accuracy and reproducibility in discriminating atypical nevi (AN) from early melanomas (EM). Objective We aimed to develop a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) model able to support dermatologists in the classification and management of atypical melanocytic ...

Monocytes are able to specifically bind heparin rapidly, reversibly, and saturably with 5.5 ± 2.6 × 106 binding sites per monocyte and a dissociation constant of 330 ± 221 nmol/l. Moreover, at least 40–50% of the cell-bound heparin can be internalized. Heparin binding by monocytes is affected by cell stimulation with an increase of the availability of binding sites after challenge with calcium ionophore, lipopolysaccharide, and interleukin 2. The interaction of heparin with monocytes ...

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbines usually operate in thermodynamic regions characterized by high-pressure ratios and strong non-ideal gas effects, complicating the aerodynamic design significantly. Systematic optimization methods accounting for multiple uncertainties due to variable operating conditions, referred to as Robust Optimization may benefit to ORC turbines aerodynamic design. This study presents an original and fast robust shape optimization approach to overcome the limitation of a deterministic ...

We present Clinica ( www.clinica.run ), an open-source software platform designed to make clinical neuroscience studies easier and more reproducible. Clinica aims for researchers to (i) spend less time on data management and processing, (ii) perform reproducible evaluations of their methods, and (iii) easily share data and results within their institution and with external collaborators. The core of Clinica is a set of automatic pipelines for processing and analysis of multimodal neuroimaging data (currently, ...

Traditional supervised learning with deep neural networks requires a tremendous amount of labelled data to converge to a good solution. For 3D medical images, it is often impractical to build a large homogeneous annotated dataset for a specific pathology. Self-supervised methods offer a new way to learn a representation of the images in an unsupervised manner with a neural network. In particular, contrastive learning has shown great promises by (almost) matching the performance of fully-supervised ...

The joint use of multiple imaging modalities for medical image segmentation has been widely studied in recent years. The fusion of information from different modalities has demonstrated to improve the segmentation accuracy, with respect to mono-modal segmentations, in several applications. However, acquiring multiple modalities is usually not possible in a clinical setting due to a limited number of physicians and scanners, and to limit costs and scan time. Most of the time, only one modality is ...

While existing makeup style transfer models perform an image synthesis whose results cannot be explicitly controlled, the ability to modify makeup color continuously is a desirable property for virtual try-on applications. We propose a new formulation for the makeup style transfer task, with the objective to learn a color controllable makeup style synthesis. We introduce CA-GAN, a generative model that learns to modify the color of specific objects (e.g. lips or eyes) in the image to an arbitrary ...

Background Tumor location is a main prognostic parameter in patients with glioblastoma. Probabilistic MRI-based brain atlases specifying the probability of tumor location associated with important demographic, clinical, histomolecular, and management data are lacking for isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastomas. Purpose To correlate glioblastoma location with clinical phenotype, surgical management, and outcomes by using a probabilistic analysis in a three-dimensional (3D) MRI-based ...

Fiber bundles stemming from tractography algorithms contain many streamlines. They require therefore a great amount of computer memory and computational resources to be stored, visualised and processed. We propose an approximation scheme for fiber bundles which results in a parsimonious representation of weighted prototypes. Prototypes are chosen among the streamlines and they represent groups of similar streamlines. Their weight is related to the number of approximated streamlines. Both streamlines ...

We present a Bayesian framework for atlas construction of multi-object shape complexes comprised of both surface and curve meshes. It is general and can be applied to any parametric deformation framework and to all shape models with which it is possible to define probability density functions (PDF). Here, both curve and surface meshes are modelled as Gaussian random varifolds, using a finite-dimensional approximation space on which PDFs can be defined. Using this framework, we can automatically estimate ...

In this paper we propose a Bayesian framework for multiobject atlas estimation based on the metric of currents which permits to deal with both curves and surfaces without relying on point correspondence. This approach aims to study brain morphometry as a whole and not as a set of different components, focusing mainly on the shape and relative position of different anatomical structures which is fundamental in neuro-anatomical studies. We propose a generic algorithm to estimate templates of sets ...

In this paper I will discuss the role played by Ernst Mach on Nietzsche's thought. Starting from the contents of his Beitrage zur Analyse der Empfindungen, I'll show the close similarities between their views on both human knowledge and the scientific world description. In his writing on science Nietzsche shares Mach's critique to the 19 th century mechanism and its metaphysical ground, as much as his way of defining the substantial notions such as matter, ego and free will. Moreover, my investigation ...

High-quality teleseismic data digitally recorded by the National Seismic Network during 1988-1995 have been analysed to tomographically reconstruct the aspherical velocity structure of the upper mantle beneath the Italian region. To improve the quality and the reliability of the tomographic images, both direct (P, PKPdf) and secondary (pP,sP,PcP,PP,PKPbc,PKPab) travel-time data were used in the inversion. Over 7000 relative residuals were computed with respect to the IASP91 Earth velocity model and ...

Abstract MOCVD has been used for the first time to grow CdHgTe by the interdiffused multilayer process for 1.3–1.55 μm photodiodes. The growth has been optimised to give uniform material with a smooth surface morphology. The use of a HgTe layer as the p-type Ohmic contact has resulted in photodiodes having a very low series resistance (30–35 Ω). The epitaxial diodes have also exhibited good thermal stability. Other parameters are comparable with those obtained for bulk grown devices.
