Jan Petrich, Wayne L. Neu, Daniel J. Stilwell,

This paper presents an system identification algorithm for the longitudinal motion of a streamlined, tail-controlled, miniature autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The motion of a rigid body in six degrees of freedom is restricted to the dive plane to derive a fourth order dynamic pitch axis model. Based on the mechanical design of the vehicle, we impose symmetry and buoyancy assumptions that allow further model truncation. Basic dependencies between inherent stability of these truncated models ...

The remarkable success of fixed speed and pitch ‘propellers’ in tapping the gusting and shifting wind begs explanation. Glauert's two-dimensional analysis of ‘horizontal axis wind turbines’ was an incomplete aside to aviation propeller theory in 1935, but is now the basis of most ‘Hawt’ algorithms. A very simple windmill optimum is found for his ‘blade element momentum’ theory, even for the movement inclined to the wind in ‘vertical axis wind turbines’. Optimizing the two-dimensional ‘Vawt’ pitch cycles for high speed ratios matches the best ...

... thermal fluctuations. In a purely monoaxial system the pitch of the conical state remains independent of temperature and magnetic field, as in mean-field theory, even when fluctuations are taken into account. However, in the presence of weak Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the plane perpendicular to the chiral axis, thermal fluctuations induce a dependence of the pitch on temperature and magnetic field. This may serve ...
