Traffic engineering enhances an ISP's capability to manage and utilize its resources effectively. MPLS has emerged as an efficient packet forwarding tool that gives a significant boost to the traffic engineering capabilities of an ISP. A fundamental problem in MPLS is to reduce label space usage by label switched paths while meeting the requirements of the flows traversing the network. Using multipoint-to-point LSP trees has been proposed as one of the techniques to reduce label space usage. We ...

... bounds and network connectivity requirements for reliable broadcast protocols in point-to-point communication networks are well known. In this paper, we consider the reliable broadcast problem in distributed systems with broadcast networks (for example, Ethernets) as the basic communication architecture. We show how properties of such network architectures can be used to effectively restrict the externally visible behavior of faulty processors. We use these techniques to derive simple protocols that implement reliable broadcast in only two rounds, ...

We start with a detailed analysis of the communication issues in today's symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) architectures to study the benefits of implementing optical interconnects (OI) in these machines. We show that the transmission of block addresses is the most critical communication bottleneck of future large SMPs owing to the need to preserve the coherence of data duplicated in caches. An address transmission bandwidth as high as 200-300 Gb/s may be necessary in ten years from now; this requirement ...
