Abstract This work evaluates the effect caused by the addition of Fe 3+ and Nb 5+ ions on the piezoelectric properties of lead zirconate titanate. Three compounds were obtained using the conventional method of mixture of oxides. The oxides were calcined at 850 °C and after that submitted to a uniaxial pressure of 70 MPa and an isostatic pressure of 200 MPa. The thyroid function (T-3 triiodothyronine; T-4 tetraiodothyronine and the captation of the I131 through the thyroid, in 2 and 24 hours after the intake of isotope radium), was studied in patients with Down's syndrome and the results being compared to those obtained from the respective siblings, all clinically normal.
