The water is an essential resource for life on the planet and for human development. The textile industry is one of the anthropogenic activities that most consume water and pollute water bodies. Therefore, the present work aims to undertake a review on the main effects of the release of industrial dyes and the essential bioremediation mechanisms. The textile dyes significantly compromise the aesthetic quality of water bodies, increase biochemical and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD), impair photosynthesis, ...

The incorrect disposal of textile dyes, such as Reactive Black 5 (RB5), causes several problems for living beings and the quality of the environment. Nanobiocomposites (NBC) produced from endophytic fungi (potentially remediation dyes-agents) and magnetic nanoparticles have high biotechnological potential due to their superparamagnetic behavior, which would allow their recovery through the magnetic field after the bioremediation process. This work aimed to obtain a new nanobiocomposite from the interaction ...

We used eye-tracking to measure the dynamic patterns of visual information acquisition in two-player normal-form games. Participants played one-shot games in which either, neither, or only one of the players had a dominant strategy. First, we performed a mixture models cluster analysis to group participants into types according to the pattern of visual information acquisition observed in a single class of games. Then, we predicted agents' choices in different classes of games and observed that patterns ...

Bioprocess monitoring capabilities are gaining increasing importance both in physiological studies and in bioprocess development. The present article focuses on on-line analytical systems since these represent the backbone of most bioprocess monitoring systems, both in academia and in industry. We discuss advantages and drawbacks of various of the most frequently used components (sampling units, flow systems and detection unit) and analytical techniques. The differences between academia and industry ...

This study uses a systematic literature review to contextualize the risks associated with food additive intake. Studies comparing food additive intake and cancer showed that adverse health effects appeared when Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) was exceeded. The review also detected a lack of studies on attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. There were more studies on non-specific hypersensitivity, highlighting such clinical manifestations as rhinitis, urticaria, and angioedema, all associated with ...

The effects of Rubrivivax gelatinosus biomass inclusion in diets of Dekalb White laying hens were assessed. The traits studied were yolk colour, consumer preference and hepatic and renal function. Broken-line regression was used to assess the biomass requirements for yolk colour attributes. Hens were fed one of six experimental diets formulated with the bacterial biomass at 0 (control), 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0 and 7.5 g/kg into a corn–soybean meal basal feed for 30 days. All tested concentrations of the ...

Thermoxidative and hydrolytic alterations of a sunflower oil used in sixty repeated and discontinuous deep‐fat fryings of potatoes were evaluated by column and high‐performance size‐exclusion (HPSE) chromatography. Successive fryings of potatoes in sunflower oil, without turnover of fresh oil during the performance of fryings, increased the level of total polar components in the oil from 3.75% to 27.28% (w/w). Triglyceride polymers, triglyceride dimers, oxidized triglycerides and diglycerides increased ...

Chagas disease is a major public health problem from South America to Mexico, with approximately 10 million infected people. Chagas disease is known to occur in Belize, but little is known about the prevalence of Trypansoma cruzi infection in the Belizean population or the Chagas vector in this region. An entomologic survey of triatomines in the central and southern region of Belize was thus performed. Triatomines were collected by community participation in 37 villages of the Cayo (central) and ...

Dishevelled (Dvl) is a key component in the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Dvl can multimerize to form dynamic protein aggregates, which are required for the activation of downstream signaling. Upon pathway activation by Wnts, Dvl becomes phosphorylated to yield phosphorylated and shifted (PS) Dvl. Both activation of Dvl in Wnt/β-catenin signaling and Wnt-induced PS-Dvl formation are dependent on casein kinase 1 (CK1) δ/ϵ activity. However, the overexpression of CK1 was shown to dissolve Dvl aggregates, ...

BACKGROUND: Nicotine receptor partial agonists may help people to stop smoking by a combination of maintaining moderate levels of dopamine to counteract withdrawal symptoms (acting as an agonist) and reducing smoking satisfaction (acting as an antagonist). OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review is to assess the efficacy and tolerability of nicotine receptor partial agonists, including cytisine, dianicline and varenicline for smoking cessation. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Tobacco ...

The north flowing Falkland/Malvinas Current has generated sediment drifts at a depth of 1200–1600 m in the Patagonian middle continental slope out of early Holocene hemipelagics, late Pleistocene ice rafted clastics, and Neogene fluvial sediments. Possibly there may be two generations of drifts, Pleistocene on the outer middle slope and Holocene on the inner shelf. The ice rafted debris originated in Antarctica, at a distance of 2000–4000 km south of Patagonia. Scattered over the upper and middle ...

The alterations of a sunflower oil were evaluated by column, gas and high‐performance size‐exclusion chromatography after being used for deep‐fat frying fifteen repeated and discontinuous times. Polar compounds increased significantly (6.2 ± 0.3% to 18.7 ± 0.8% in oil). Linoleic acid decreased (53.8 ± 0.2 to 48.1 ± 0.8 mg/100 mg oil) while oleic acid remained unaltered after 15 fryings. Saturated fatty acids such as palmitic and stearic, also remained unaltered. Triglyceride polymers (0.1 ± 0.0 to 2.4 ± 0.2 mg/ ...

Abstract The modification of a sunflower oil used for 75 repeated deep‐fat fryings of potatoes, with a fast turnover of fresh oil during frying, was evaluated by measuring the total polar components isolated by column chromatography. The total polar components increased rapidly during the first 20 fryings from 5.09±0.21 (mean±SD) mg/100 mg unused oil to 15.99±0.40, followed by minor but also significant changes until the thirtieth frying (17.99±0.41 mg/100 mg oil). The level did not increase further ...
