The newly discovered intermediate polar RXJ0558+53 has been reported to have a spin period of 272 s. We find modulations at both 272 and 545 s, implying that the spin period of the white dwarf is twice that previously suggested. Thus, RXJ0558+53, along with YY Dra, is unusual in showing a modulation with most of the power at the first harmonic, rather than at the spin frequency.

Alasdair Allan, C. Hellier, A. P. Beardmore,

We analyse the spectral changes over the spin modulation in the intermediate polar EX Hya using archival ASCA data. We find that the modulation can be modelled as either (1) the effect of occultation of the accretion poles by the limb of the white dwarf, or (2) the effect of phase-dependent photoelectric absorption. We argue, on the basis of the partial X-ray eclipse, that the accretion columns in the system are tall, with shock height ∼Rwd, and hence that the spin modulation is caused mainly by occultation. ...

RXTE made five X-ray observations of the magnetic accretor GK Per during its 1996 outburst, recording a count rate of 10 times the quiescent level. The 351-s spin pulse shows a deep, nearly sinusoidal modulation, in contrast to the weaker, double-humped profile of quiescence. The spectrum shows absorption increased by two orders of magnitude over quiescence. We explain these differences in terms of the changing accretion geometry as the outbursting disc forces the magnetosphere inwards, and discuss ...

In this paper, we propose a new class of lattices constructed from polar codes, namely polar lattices, to achieve the capacity (1/2) log(1+SNR) of the additive white Gaussiannoise (AWGN) channel. Our construction follows the multilevel approach of Forney et al., where we construct a capacity-achieving polar code on each level. The component polar codes are shown to be naturally nested, thereby, fulfilling the requirement of the multilevel lattice construction. We prove that the polar lattices are ...

Recently Kakitani and Mataga claimed that the free energy dependence of electron transfer rates in polar solvents could be explained by taking into account the dielectric saturation effect of polar solvents. It is shown that the basic assumption of their model is incorrect. The correct treatment of the dielectric saturation effect on electron transfer rates is presented. It is concluded that the apparent absence of the so-called inverted region in the free energy dependence of electron transfer ...

The purpose of this paper is to show how to solve in Hamiltonian formalism the equations of the polar motion of any arbitrarily shaped elastic celestial body, i.e. the motion of its rotation axis (or angular momentum) with respect to its figure axis. With this aim, we deduce from canonical equations related to the rotational Hamiltonian of the body, the analytical solution for its free polar motion which depends both on the elasticity and on its moments of inertia. In particular, we study the influence ...

SUMMARY This study develops the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM) for geometrically nonlinear large deformation problems. The formulation of a spring bond deformation under a large deformation is derived under the Lagrange framework using polar decomposition. The results reveal that the DLSM's stiffness matrix under small deformations is the tangent stiffness matrix of the DLSM under large deformations. The formulation of the spring bond internal force under a given configuration is also presented ...

Four isomerically pure octasubstituted zinc phthalocyanines with variations in the attachment atom and positions of the substituents were selected for a systematic investigation of the effect of the substitution pattern on their electronic and spectroscopic properties. Effects which were investigated are the position, the electron donating and withdrawing properties, and the donating force of the substituent. The results are discussed and interpreted based on theoretical and experimental determination ...

Recent results regarding subpulse drift in pulsar B0943+10 have led to the identification of a stable system of sub-beams circulating around the magnetic axis of the star. Here, we present single-pulse analysis of pulsar B0834+06 at 35 MHz, using observations from the Gauribidanur Radio Telescope. Certain signatures in the fluctuation spectra and correlations allow estimation of the circulation time and drift direction of the underlying emission pattern responsible for the observed modulation. We ...

We report on an analysis of the drifting subpulses of PSR B0320+39 that indicates a sudden step of ~180 degrees in subpulse phase near the centre of the pulse profile. The phase step, in combination with the attenuation of the periodic subpulse modulation at pulse longitudes near the step, suggests that the patterns arise from the addition of two superposed components of nearly opposite drift phase and differing longitudinal dependence. We argue that since there cannot be physical overlap of spark ...
