Tailor, Pomatomus saltatrix, from the eastern coast of Australia were sampled and typed for nine polymorphic gene loci, using allozyme electrophoresis. Tailor were also sampled from the western coast but were typed for only six of the same nine gene loci. East-coast samples did not differ significantly from each other, apart from the frequency of one allele at one gene locus, and are hence considered as one genetic stock. The west-coast tailor differed significantly from the east-coast tailor at ...

Nucleotide variation of partial cytochrome b sequences was analysed in the bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix to investigate the population‐structuring roles of climate change and oceanic barriers. Western and eastern North Atlantic Ocean populations appeared to be totally isolated, with the latter connected to the Mediterranean Sea within which further structuring occurred.

Elf Pomatomus saltatrix account for between 28% and 80% of the annually recorded recreational shore-angling catch in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and have been subjected to various management regimes over the past 33 years. Management of the elf fishery was amended in 2005 to reduce fishing mortality and enhance egg production, following an assessment in 1997, which considered the elf stock to be overexploited and in need of rebuilding. A compromise was reached whereby the bag limit was reduced ...

The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, is often a preferred host for infection by the isopod, gill ectoparasite Lironeca ovalis. Here we quantify the occurrence of infection by L. ovalis on young-of-the-year bluefish in the Hudson River estuary and evaluate whether there is a significant reduction in growth or foraging as a result of infection. Prevalence of L. ovalis on bluefish was high (25.4%) but small ( 175 mm) exhibited significantly lower prevalences than intermediate-sized fish. Parasite size increased ...

Fifty-five specimens of bluefish, Pomatomus saltator (Linnaeus, 1766), collected at Cabo Frio (23oS, 42oW), State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between March 1995 and November 1995, were necropsied to study their infracommunities of metazoan parasites. Sixteen species of metazoan parasites were collected. All fish were parasitized by one or more metazoan. The digeneans were the majority of the parasite specimens collected, with 44.2%, followed by the helminth larval stages (cestodes, acanthocephalans, ...
