A modification of Twist Extrusion (TE) process, Planar Twist Extrusion (PTE) with a die having two flat parallel walls moving by the plunger, was designed and implemented in the present study. Characteristics of the deformed state after PTE and TE as well as pressures involved in the processes were studied by means of experiments on aluminum samples and finite element modelling. A method for growing large platelet crystals of Y3Fe5O12 by solid-phase recrystallization of polycrystalline material is considered. Using platelets as seeds, the authors describe the growth of garnet crystals in lead borate fluxes and discuss the characteristics of the crystallization process in the solid phase and in fluxes on seeds. Phase equilibrium data on the system PbO-PbF2-B2O3-Y2O3-Fe2O3 are also presented.

A quantitative description of the vacancy aging process in amorphous thin films during their crystallization is made. It is shown that a thin-film effect to increase elastic deformations is likely to occur in vacancy aging thin films as compared with the corresponding deformations of equiaxed bodies.
