This paper explored whether the association between green space and mental health is moderated by age and gender. Questionnaires on psychopathology and quality of life were filled out by 4924 individuals from the general Dutch population and regressed on greenness levels. Green space was associated with better mental health, but only in specific age and gender groups, and only in a 3 km, not a 1 km buffer. The moderating effects of age and gender may be explained by whether or not people have the ...

In accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI), the most commonly used fractionation schemes include 340 or 385 cGy delivered in a twice-daily administration. A further extension of the APBI literature has been the recent interest in extremely short courses of adjuvant radiotherapy, usually delivered by intraoperative radiotherapy techniques. This newer area of single-fraction radiotherapy approaches remains highly contentious. In particular, the recently reported TargetedIntraoperativeRadiotherapy( ...

A 2855-g white female was born at 38 4/7 weeks gestation to a healthy 31-year-old primigravida woman by spontaneous vaginal delivery after labor that was augmented with pitocin. The mother’s pregnancy was uncomplicated. For the week before delivery, she had self medicated with raspberry leaf tea and a total of thirteen 500-mg capsules of evening primrose oil, vaginally and orally, in hopes of ripening her cervix to improve labor. The infant was born after 16 hours of labor, with Apgar scores of ...

Austin Mast, Elena Conti,

The repeated evolution of heterostyly in 28 or more families of flowering plants (Ganders, 1979; Barrett, 2002) has elicited considerable research attention. Perhaps no family has sustained the interest of researchers in heterostyly for so long, or provided the subject to research on it with such frequency, as the primroses (Primula) and their relatives in Primulaceae (e.g. Darwin, 1862, 1877; Richards, 2002). The special section on heterostyly in this issue grew out of a symposium that we organized ...

Richard A. Miller,

Summary Organism envy afflicts most researchers who work on aging in mice; how frustrating it is to see the worm and fly biologists nail down milestone after milestone, citation after citation! Surely genetic trickery can produce mice that age in a comparable jiffy? Alas, our near‐total ignorance of what times the aging process makes it hard to guess what genes to tweak, if indeed aging can be mimicked a presto . Building a case that a given short‐lived mutant ages quickly is a steep and thorny path, ...
