... children's identity in the rural community of Punta Gorda, Belize. My purpose is to discuss the nature of ethnicity in Punta Gorda and to contrast government policy towards children's identity with children's own life experiences as described by the children themselves. Belize became independent from Great Britain only in 1981, and its population includes six different ethnic groups. Consequently, identity has become a particularly urgent issue to government leaders and policy makers, and the Belizean government actively promotes ethnicity and nationalism in its schools through a curriculum designed to teach about the ethnic diversity of the country. The children of Punta Gorda, however, have little in common with the lessons ...

... participants, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data in Belize City and Punta Gorda, and we found that the variety of Kriol spoken in Belize City is rated more highly in general along several dimensions than the variety spoken in Punta Gorda. We also found that BC Kriol was rated more highly by male participants from both test sites. This paper is the first installment of an ongoing project, which investigates the linguistic prestige system(s) in place with respect to Kriol by region and among individual ethnic groups in Belize.

... participants, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data in Belize City and Punta Gorda, and tested attitudes toward two varieties of Kriol. We found that the variety spoken in Belize City, which is closer to the traditional Kriol vernacular, is held in higher regard than that spoken in Punta Gorda, and that there is little difference between genders in this respect. This is interesting in terms of sociolinguistic thought, as stronger preference for the vernacular is generally associated with men. We attribute this to a rise of post-independence nationalism, globalization of the coastal economy, and the growing language rights movement in Belize.
