Abstract Dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at ∼kiloparsec scales are the progenitor population of SMBH mergers and play an important role in understanding the pairing and dynamical evolution of massive black holes in galaxy mergers. Because of the stringent resolution requirement and the apparent rareness of these small-separation pairs, there are scarce observational constraints on this population, with few confirmed dual SMBHs at <10 kpc separations at z > 1. Here we present results from a pilot ...

Background: Little is known about the risk of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) among patients with sepsis. We aimed to characterize the incidence and outcome of IHCA among patients with sepsis in a national database. We then determined the major risk factors associated with IHCA among sepsis patients. Methods: We used data from a population-based cohort study based on the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan (NHRID) between 2000 and 2013. We used Martin's implementation that combined ...

We expressed the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) along with mutant p185neu proteins containing the rat transmembrane point mutation. The work concerned the study of the contributions made by various p185neusubdomains to signaling induced by a heterodimeric ErbB complex. Co-expression of full-length EGFR and oncogenic p185neu receptors resulted in an increased EGF-induced phosphotyrosine content of p185neu, increased cell proliferation to limiting concentrations of EGF, and increases in both ...

Purpose The discriminative thinking that Chinese entrepreneurs are weak in innovations is widespread. But market competition, which is the main drive for innovations, has been introduced to post‐planning‐economy China for only 30 years or so, and China has only ten years' experience in modern global competition after her entry into the WTO in 2001. Who can say China will not be as innovative as today's advanced counterparts? The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible internal consistencies ...

A rational synthetic approach to the first four-membered ring-containing derivatives of C62 is reported. They were synthesized by an inverse electron demand Diels−Alder reaction of 3,6-diaryl-1,2,4,5-tetrazines with C60 in o-dichlorobenzene, followed by visible light irradiation at reflux. The structure of these nonclassical fullerenes derivatives was determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction.

We present a sample of 706, $z < 1.5$ active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from optical photometric variability in three of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) deep fields (E2, C3, and X3) over an area of 4.64 deg$^2$. We construct light curves using difference imaging aperture photometry for resolved sources and non-difference imaging PSF photometry for unresolved sources, respectively, and characterize the variability significance. Our DES light curves have a mean cadence of 7 days, a 6 year baseline, and ...

Abstract Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically important pathogen and has evolved several mechanisms to evade IFN-I responses. We report that a host microRNA, miR-30c, was upregulated by PRRSV via activating NF-κB and facilitated its ability to infect subject animals. Subsequently, we demonstrated that miR-30c was a potent negative regulator of IFN-I signaling by targeting JAK1, resulting in the enhancement of PRRSV infection. In addition, we found that JAK1 ...

The mitochondrion is a gatekeeper of apoptotic processes, and mediates drug resistance to several chemotherapy agents used to treat cancer. Neuroblastoma is a common solid cancer in young children with poor clinical outcomes following conventional chemotherapy. We sought druggable mitochondrial protein targets in neuroblastoma cells. Among mitochondria-associated gene targets, we found that high expression of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase 2 (SLC25A5/ANT2), was a strong predictor ...

Lysophosphatidic acid is a class of bioactive phospholipid that mediates most of its biological effects through LPA receptors, of which six isoforms have been identified. The recent results from LPA1 knockout mice suggested that blocking LPA1 signaling could provide a potential novel approach for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Here, we report the design and synthesis of pyrazole- and triazole-derived carbamates as LPA1-selective and LPA1/3 dual antagonists. In particular, compound ...

Summary Esophageal cancer is a common and highly lethal disease. In the Asia‐Pacific region, esophageal squamous cell neoplasias are the major forms of the disease. Recent advances in endoscopic therapy enable curative treatment of early esophageal squamous cell neoplasias, however, the technique is complicated and requires a high level of expertise, especially for those with long‐segment lesions. Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation is a rapidly evolving treatment modality and has been shown to have ...

The complex selectively responded to dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3) in the presence of a mixture of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with a binding constant (log K) of 3.85 ± 0.02 in CHCl3. Abstract In their recent critique, Qian et al. stated that the results of structural equation modeling analysis ( SEM ) in Chan et al. were flawed. Here, we show that the source of the difference, in their reanalysis, is that Qian et al. did not follow the standard, iterative strategy of SEM , which allows researchers to evaluate which model offers the best account of the data in both absolute and relative terms. Here, we provide step‐by‐step instructions to reproduce our published results. We address— ...

The CNS can be activated by both local and systemic inflammation, resulting in the manifestation of sickness symptoms. The pathways by which the CNS is activated under these two conditions, however, may differ. In this study, we injected casein into the peritoneal cavity (i.p.) or into an s.c. air pouch of mice to induce restricted local inflammation. Both routes of casein injection caused fever and reduced locomotor activity. These responses were not accompanied by the statistically significant ...

We consider media streaming using application-level multicast (ALM) where packet loss has to be recovered via retransmission in a timely manner. Since packets may be lost due to congestion, node failures, and join and leave dynamics, traditional "vertical" recovery approach where upstream nodes retransmit the lost packets is no longer effective. We therefore propose lateral error recovery (LER). In LER, hosts are divided into a number of planes, each of which forms an independent ALM tree. Since error ...

ABSTRACT We study the optical gri photometric variability of a sample of 190 quasars within the SDSS Stripe 82 region that have long-term photometric coverage during ∼1998−2020 with SDSS, PanSTARRS-1, the Dark Energy Survey, and dedicated follow-up monitoring with Blanco 4m/DECam. With on average ∼200 nightly epochs per quasar per filter band, we improve the parameter constraints from a Damped Random Walk (DRW) model fit to the light curves over previous studies with 10–15 yr baselines and ≲ 100 epochs. ...

Abstract New materials that exhibit strong second-order optical nonlinearities at a desired operational frequency are of paramount importance for nonlinear optics. Giant second-order susceptibility χ (2) has been obtained in semiconductor quantum wells (QWs). Unfortunately, the limited confining potential in semiconductor QWs causes formidable challenges in scaling such a scheme to the visible/near-infrared (NIR) frequencies for more vital nonlinear-optic applications. Here, we introduce a metal/dielectric ...

The Linzizong volcanic successions that crop out in the Lhasa terrane, southern Tibet have been conventionally regarded as the products of northward subduction of the Neotethyan oceanic slab beneath South Asia. This study reports geochemical data of 100+ volcanic rocks from the Lhasa terrane to better constrain the temporal–spatial distribution and petrogenesis of the Linzizong volcanism.
