Neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) is an effective method for relief of the pain of pancreatic cancer, but many physicians are reluctant to use the technique because of the perception that the incidence of complications is high. We analyzed the incidence of complications and the quality of pain relief obtained during the use of NCPB in 136 patients with pancreatic cancer. Eighty-five percent of the patients had good pain relief that, in 75% of cases, lasted through the patients' remaining life. ...

IL-1 causes a marked increase in the degree of expansion of naïve and memory CD4 T cells in response to challenge with their cognate antigen. The response occurs when only specific CD4 T cells can respond to IL-1β, is not induced by a series of other cytokines and does not depend on IL-6 or CD-28. When WT cells are primed in IL-1R1 −/− recipients, IL-1 increases the proportion of cytokine-producing transgenic CD4 T cells, especially IL-17- and IL-4-producing cells, strikingly increases serum IgE levels ...

The ridges of the Western Sudety are well exposed to the humid maritime air masses that are mainly associated with westerly atmospheric circulation. Fog is the most frequently observed atmospheric phenomenon, being present on average 45% of the time, with 250–300 days with fog per year. This study on temporal variation of fog in both daily and annual cycles is based on 30 years of measurements (1961–1990) made on Mt. Szrenica at 1362 m a.s.l. Based on the data from 51 meteorological stations and ...

Plant mutants with defects in intermediate enzymes of the tryptophan biosynthetic pathway often display a blue fluorescent phenotype. This phenotype results from the accumulation of the fluorescent tryptophan precursor anthranilate, the bulk of which is found in a glucose-conjugated form. To elucidate factors that control fluorescent tryptophan metabolites, we conducted a genetic screen for suppressors of blue fluorescence in the Arabidopsis trp1-100 mutant, which has a defect in the second enzymatic ...

Current practice for the design of steel beam-columns (i.e., members under combined axial load and bending) subject to fire is to calculate the capacity of these members assuming a uniform temperature distribution through the depth of the section. This assumption may be acceptable for some members, but there are cases where the member will be heated nonuniformly, thereby developing a thermal gradient through its depth. This paper analyzes the effects of thermal gradients on the combined axial load ( ...

This paper outlines a closed-form methodology that can be used to predict the increase in demand experienced by the perimeter columns that are part of a fire-exposed steel building frame. The two-dimensional elevation-view subassembly considered for this study includes a two-storey length of the perimeter column and the floor beam framing into the column in the direction perpendicular to the building’s exterior. When heated, this beam will expand and induce bending moment and lateral deflection ...

Yardangs, an exclusive landform due to intensive wind erosion, cover a large area in the hyper-arid Lut desert of Iran. This paper presents a new approach using Self Organizing Map (SOM) as unsupervised algorithm of artificial neural networks for analysis and characterization of yardangs. Nowadays, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) with 3 arc sec data (approximately 90 m resolution) and nearly world wide coverage provides uniform good quality data. The SRTM 3 arc sec data were re-projected ...

This paper proposes a simplified closed-form methodology with which to predict the thermal and structural response of steel perimeter columns in high-rise building frames exposed to fire. Due to their orientation in the building compartment, perimeter columns are heated on three sides and will develop a thermal gradient through their crosssectional depth. Restraint of the thermal expansion associated with this gradient will cause these members to experience a combination of axial load (P) and bending ...

This paper examines the level of detail and complexity that one needs to incorporate in a computational finite element (FE) model to predict the thermal and structural response of steel high-rise building frames to fire. Comparisons are made between these models in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Performance related to three parameters was examined: (1) the representation of the structural system as a 3-D full frame model versus a 2-D plane-frame model, both of which include the steel frame and ...

The local buckling capacity of fire-exposed steel cross sections is affected by the reduction in strength and stiffness associated with an increase in steel temperature. Using a stress-based approach, simple continuous equations that account for these reductions are proposed in this paper to calculate the ultimate strength of thin steel plates (i.e. idealized webs and flanges) at elevated temperature. Calculations made using the proposed equations show good agreement with computational results for ...

This paper presents a semi-automatic method using an unsupervised neural network to analyze geomorphometric features as landform elements. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) provided detailed digital elevation models (DEMs) for all land masses between 60°N and 57°S. Exploiting these data for recognition and extraction of geomorphometric features is a challenging task. Results obtained with two methods, Wood's morphometric parameterization and the Self Organizing Map (SOM), are presented in ...

During a fire, columns on the perimeter of a building will be subject to moments induced by both a thermal gradient and the restraint of axial expansion by adjacent heated beams, which themselves develop axial load. These members thus act as beam-columns because they are then subject to a combination of axial load plus moment caused by a combination of gravity plus thermal loading. This paper presents a two-pronged procedure to predict the behavior of the perimeter column as a beam-column, considering ...

The mechanisms regulating clonal expansion and contraction of T cells in response to immunization remain to be identified. A recent study established that there was a log-linear relation between CD4 T-cell precursor number (PN) and factor of expansion (FE), with a slope of ∼-0.5 over a range of 3-30,000 precursors per mouse. The results suggested inhibition of precursor expansion either by competition for specific antigen-presenting cells or by the action of other antigen-specific cells in the same ...

In current practice, progressive collapse analysis typically includes two types of hazards: the initial hazard that causes localized damage and the subsequent response of the structure to bridge loads across the damaged areas (analysis referred to as alternate path method). However, little detailed information is available on a third type of hazard, such as fire that typically follows the initial hazard. Prolonged exposure of a damaged structure to fire could be detrimental to the short-term stability ...

Antigen-driven expansion of specific CD4 T cells diminishes, on a per cell basis, as infused cell number increases. There is a linear relation between log precursor number and log factor of expansion (FE), with a slope of ∼−0.5 over a range from 3 to 30,000 precursors. Cell number dependence of FE is observed at low precursor number, implying that the underlying process physiologically regulates antigen-driven T-cell expansion. FE of small numbers of transgenic precursors is not significantly affected ...

Remote sensing, evaluation of digital elevation models (DEM), geographic information systems (GIS) and fieldwork techniques were combined to study the groundwater conditions in Eritrea. Remote sensing data were interpreted to produce lithological and lineament maps. DEM was used for lineament and geomorphologic mapping. Field studies permitted the study of structures and correlated them with lineament interpretations. Hydrogeological setting of springs and wells were investigated in the field, from ...

Plants derive a number of important secondary metabolites from the amino acid tryptophan (Trp), including the growth regulator indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and defense compounds against pathogens and herbivores. In previous work, we found that a dominant overexpression allele of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) Myb transcription factor ATR1, atr1D, activates expression of a Trp synthesis gene as well as the Trp-metabolizing genes CYP79B2, CYP79B3, and CYP83B1, which encode enzymes implicated in ...
