Epigeous saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal sporocarps were assessed during 7 yr in a French temperate experimental forest site with six 30-year-old mono-specific plantations (four coniferous and two hardwood plantations) and one 150-year-old native mixed deciduous forest. A total of 331 fungal species were identified. Half of the fungal species were ECM, but this proportion varied slightly by forest composition. The replacement of the native forest by mono-specific plantations, including ...

In the early times of taxonomy of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota), exclusively sporocarpic species were described. Since then the focus has mainly shifted to species forming spores singly. For many of the sporocarpic species, no molecular data have been made available, and their phylogenetic position has remained unclear. We obtained small subunit ribosomal rDNA and internal transcribed spacer data from specimens of glomeromycotan sporocarps from tropical areas that were assigned to ...

Fungi represent an essential component of biodiversity, not only because of the large number of species, but also for their ecological, evolutionary and socio-economic significance. Yet, until recently, fungi received scant consideration in ecology, especially invasion ecology. Their under-representation is largely the result of a lack of scientific knowledge of fungal biodiversity and ecology. With the exception of pathogenic fungi, which cause emergent infectious diseases, the impact of fungal ...

A phylogenetic analysis of Trametes and related taxa is proposed, based on a wide sampling of temperate and tropical species. Concatenate sequences of ribosomal DNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and RPB2 gene from mycelia cultures were analyzed by Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian methods, whilst morphological features were documented from the corresponding herbarium vouchers. Congruent results were obtained from analyses of ribosomal LSU sequences downloaded from Genbank. The Bayesian analysis of ITS + RPB2 sequences ...

ABSTRACT In this study, natural fungal diversity in wood-decaying species was explored for biomass deconstruction. In 2007 and 2008, fungal isolates were collected in temperate forests mainly from metropolitan France and in tropical forests mainly from French Guiana. We recovered and identified 74 monomorph cultures using morphological and molecular identification tools. Following production of fungal secretomes under inductive conditions, we evaluated the capacity of these fungal strains to potentiate ...

Molecular phylogenies using 1–4 gene regions and information on ecology, morphology and pigment chemistry were used in a partial revision of the agaric family Hygro- phoraceae. The phylogenetically supported genera we recognize here in the Hygrophoraceae based on these and previous analyses are: Acantholichen, Ampulloclitocybe, Arrhenia, Cantharellula, Cantharocybe, Chromosera, Chrysomphalina, Cora, Corella, Cuphophyllus, Cyphellostereum, Dictyonema, Eonema, Gliophorus, Haasiella, Humidicutis, Hygroaster, ...

Applying early names, with or without original material, to genealogical species is challenging. For morels this task is especially difficult because of high morphological stasis and high plasticity of apothecium color and shape. Here we propose a nomenclatural revision of true morels (Morchella, Pezizales) from Europe and North America, based on molecular phylogenetic analyses of portions of the genes for RNA polymerase II largest subunit (RPB1) and second largest subunit (RPB2), translation elongation ...

This paper attributes two more species to Cantharellus subg. Cinnabarinus: the here newly described C. coccolobae, a strict associate of Coccoloba species in subtropical and tropical America, and the New Caledonian C. garnieri. A multigene analysis places both species in a genus phylogeny and their macro- and microscopic features are illustrated and discussed.

For about 50 years, scientists have studied the biological activities of Macromycetes on different pathologies. In this article different fungal activities that reduce the effects of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are reviewed. Among the 17 species tested on animals, 16 demonstrated at least one of the following activities: ability to reduce hypercholesterolemia or to cure dyslipoproteinemia, possibility to decrease arterial hypertension or hyperglycemia, and ability to cure disturbances ...

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Abstract Fungal biotechnology is set to play a keystone role in the emerging bioeconomy, notably to address pollution issues arising from human activities. Because they preserve biological diversity, Biological Resource Centres are considered as critical infrastructures to support the development of biotechnological solutions. Here, we report the first large-scale phenotyping of more than 1,000 fungal strains with evaluation of their growth and degradation potential towards five industrial, human- ...

The biogeography of neotropical fungi remains poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct the origins and diversification of neotropical lineages in one of the largest clades of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the globally widespread family Russulaceae. We inferred a supertree of 3285 operational taxonomic units, representing worldwide internal transcribed spacer sequences. We reconstructed biogeographic history and diversification and identified lineages in the Neotropics and adjacent Patagonia. The ectomycorrhizal ...
