This study assessed the feasibility of different methods for sulfate optimization of limestone calcined clay cements (LC3). LC3-based pastes were studied with kaolinite and montmorillonite calcined clays and different gypsum contents. Quartz powder was used in reference systems. The sulfate optimization was done using isothermal calorimetry, compressive strength, thermogravimetric analysis, and chemical shrinkage analysis at different ages. Overall, there is no single best technique to predict sulfate ...

This study analyzed the mechanical and environmental performance of an alternative low-carbon cement (Limestone Calcined Clay Cement, LC3) made from different Brazilian natural and waste clay-based materials. Data from an extensive laboratory program to characterize the alternative materials have been utilized. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based on a cradle-to-gate approach was also performed. The results give decision-makers and the cement industry a better understanding of environmental impact ...

The Amazon rainforest has 90% of Brazil's total kaolin reserves, and its mining is of great economic interest. However, the intense kaolin activity produces large quantities of deposited waste in tailing dams, generating a tremendous environmental and local economic liability. Such wastes have no economic value, but their high kaolinite composition can be interesting for the cement industry. Thus, this study aimed to valorize such material as a potential Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) ...

This study aims to evaluate the influence of low-grade local materials as clinker substitute in ternary cements, with calcined clay (30 wt%) and limestone (15 wt%), also known as LC³ cements. A coal mining waste (based on 35 wt% kaolinite content, AR) and a dolomitic limestone (LLS) were compared to more pure materials such as natural clay (constituted by 83% kaolinite content, NC) and high-grade limestone (HLS), respectively. LC³ cements were compared to reference system (45 wt% quartz filler instead ...

Manganese ore is one of the most processed in the world and it is considered essential in the manufacture of iron, steel alloys, batteries etc. However, during its mining and processing, a large portion of wastes are deposited in open-air landfills causing vary environmental risks. Here, such residue (MnW) was proposed as a filler material in Portland cement. The effects of partial substitutions of cement by MnW were assessed by compressive strength, water absorption, void index, bulk density, scanning ...

Abstract Stopping land degradation is one of the biggest challenges worldwide and particularly in Burundi, with its unprecedented rates of soil loss and growing food insecurity. This article proposes a different discourse on how to engage people in stopping land degradation, and presents results and lessons learned from a bottom‐up inclusive approach implemented since 2014 in Burundi: the integrated farm planning (PIP) approach. The PIP approach aims to build a solid foundation for sustainable change ...

In this paper, we address a variant of a classical optimization model in the context of maximizing the diversity of a set of elements. In particular, we propose heuristics to maximize the mean dispersion of the selected elements in a given set. This NP-hard problem was recently introduced as the maximum mean dispersion problem (MaxMeanDP), and it models several real problems, from pollution control to ranking of web pages. In this paper, we first review the previous methods for the MaxMeanDP, and ...

This study analysed the extrinsic constraint of induced aerodynamic flow (IAF) on the first serve by expert tennis players with temporal organization of the movement, as well as the velocity and amplitude of the racket motion analyzed. Twelve expert right-handed tennis players voluntarily participated in this study. Each player performed 20 trials without IAF and another 20 trials for each different speed configuration of induced cross-wind: 2.4 m/s; 4.3 m/s; 5.8 m/s; and random speed. The coefficient ...

Abstract This study investigated the physicochemical effects of kaolinite (CK) and montmorillonite (CM) calcined clays on the sulfate balance, early hydration, and artificial pore solution of limestone calcined clay cement (LC 3 ). The effects of fineness, clay dissolution, and ion-adsorption capacity were evaluated by isothermal calorimetry, compressive strength, ICP-OES, and zeta potential within 72 h, respectively. Increasing the fineness of both calcined clays did not significantly affect the sulfate ...

In this paper we propose three different VNS variants to solve the Max-Mean Dispersion Problem. This problem consists of selecting a set of elements in such a way that the average distance between them is maximized. To tackle this problem, we propose a Basic Variable Neighborhood Search (BVNS), a Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND) and a Generalized Variable Neighborhood Search (GVNS) that hybridizes the previous two methods. Experimentation on previously reported instances shows that the Variable ...

Age has a major effect on brain volume. However, the normative studies available are constrained by small sample sizes, restricted age coverage and significant methodological variability. These limitations introduce inconsistencies and may obscure or distort the lifespan trajectories of brain morphometry. Abstract Vegetation and atmosphere processes are coupled through a myriad of interactions linking plant transpiration, carbon dioxide assimilation, turbulent transport of moisture, heat and atmospheric constituents, aerosol formation, moist convection, and precipitation. Advances in our understanding are hampered by discipline barriers and challenges in understanding the role of small spatiotemporal scales. In this perspective, we propose to study the atmosphere–ecosystem interaction as a continuum ...
