The circumstellar dust shells of intermediate initial-mass (about 1 to 8 solar masses) evolved stars are generated by copious mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch phase. The density structure of their circumstellar shell is the direct evidence of mass loss processes, from which we can investigate the nature of mass loss. We used the AKARI Infrared Astronomy Satellite and the Spitzer Space Telescope to obtain the surface brightness maps of an evolved star R Cas at far-infrared wavelengths, ...

MERLIN maps are presented of the OH 1665- and 1667-MHz masers in the circumstellar envelopes of the Mira variables U Her and R Cas, and the semiregular variable W Hya. For U Her, approximately 95 per cent of the OH maser emission comes from a partially filled thick shell, at radii between 50 and 135 au from the star. Across this shell, the logarithmic velocity gradient, |$\varepsilon$|, is in the range |$0\lt \varepsilon \lt 0.3$|. The OH masers of U Her have a core-halo structure. The strongest and ...

An abundance analysis of μ Cas is carried out on the basis of four Palomar exposures in the visual region, using the differential curve-of-growth method. The star has an iron: hydrogen ratio four times lower than that of the Sun and it belongs to the α -rich group discovered by Wallerstein. Relative to iron, Mg, Si, Ca and Ti are overabundant by factors between 1.5 and 2 and Mn is underabundant by a factor of about 2, while Na, Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn and Y have normal abundances. Less definite results ...

New photometric observations of TY Boo, AD Cnc, and V523 Cas are subjected to synthetic light-curve analyses using the Wilson-Devinney code. Solutions for each of the systems, and the several competing theories of contact binary structure are discussed in light of the results. Both AD Cnc and V523 Cas are modeled with subluminous regions, and the resulting starspot parameters are reported. A simultaneous solution of the B, V light curves and the radial-velocity curves of V523 Cas is presented. Spectroscopic ...

Near-infrared spectroscopy (0.8-2.5 μm) from two epochs is presented for the very slow nova V723 Cassiopeiae (=Nova Cassiopeiae 1995). Its bright, comparatively narrow emission lines (FWHM ~ 500 km s-1) make it ideal for determining wavelengths of unidentified emission lines that appear in the nebular/coronal stages of novae. We present wavelengths for 16 previously unobserved or unidentified features and search for identifications by looking for coincidences with known atomic transitions. For a candidate ...

We report 1.25 to 18 μm infrared photometry spectroscopy of the optically thin dust shell of V705 Cassiopeiae (Nova Cas 1993) between 330 and 418 days after the outburst. The measurements show that the dust shell, which had been optically thick until at least day ≈ 131, now shows the spectral signatures of optically thin astrophysical silicate grains at 10 and 20 μm and hydrocarbons at 3.2-3.4 and 11.3 μm. The 1-8 μm continuum which is due to carbon dust is still present, although it no longer has ...

We present the results of a broad-band X-ray study of the enigmatic Be star Gamma Cassiopeiae (herein gamma Cas) based on observations made with both the Suzaku and INTEGRAL observatories. gamma Cas has long been recognized as the prototypical example of a small subclass of Be stars with moderately strong X-ray emission dominated by a hot thermal component in the 0.5-12 keV energy range Lx ~ 10^32 - 10^33 erg s^-1. This places them at the high end of the known luminosity distribution for stellar emission, ...
