This review compiles the available information on potential sources and methodologies for the recovery of phenolic compounds from the residues (solid residue, wastewater or hydrolate) of the essential oil distillation of a total of 47 cultivated (native and exotic) or wild-collected aromatic plants of the Mediterranean region. Special attention has been paid to the new and promising techniques of distillation and processing of residues in the sense of a more efficient recovery of phenolic compounds ...

Fatty acids are important in male reproductive function because they are associated with membrane fluidity, acrosome reaction, sperm motility and viability, but limited information exists about the fatty acid profile of ram semen. Our aim was to determine the fatty acid composition in ram spermatozoa and seminal plasma. Sixty ejaculates were obtained from three ram (20 ejaculates/ram) using artificial vagina. Ram spermatozoa (RS) and seminal plasma (SP) were separated using centrifugation, and the ...

Interposition grafting material is used frequently to treat osteoarthritis of the base of the thumb or tendinous and ligamentous injuries of the hand. The observation of duplicated tendons in the first dorsal compartment of the hand prompted us to explore the possibility of using the accessory abductor pollicis longus (AAPL) tendon as grafting material. Based on dissections of 78 cadaveric upper limbs, we describe the number of tendons in the first dorsal compartment of the hand, the number of muscle ...

Abstract In the present article, the elastic constants for unidirectional transversely isotropic laminated composites are measured using the optoacoustic method. In this method, a laser pulse is used as a standard source of ultrasound. Different three-layer unidirectional laminated specimens with different volume fractions of reinforced graphite 716, Kevlar KS-400, and S-2 glass fibers were prepared. The engineering elastic constants ( E 1 , E 2 , G 12 , x 12 ) were obtained by means of the longitudinal velocity ...

The overall properties of a binary elastic periodic fiber-reinforced composite are studied here for a cell periodicity of square type. Exact formulae are obtained for the effective stiffnesses, which give closed-form expressions for composites with isotropic components including ones for empty and rigid fibers. The new formulae are simple and relatively easy to compute. Examples show the dependences of the stiffnesses as a function of fiber volume fraction up to the percolation limit. The specific ...

This work deals with the modelling of periodic composites made of piezoceramic (lead zirconate-titanat) fibres embedded in a soft non-piezoelectric matrix (polymer). The goal is to predict the effective coefficients of such periodic transversely isotropic piezoelectric fibre composites by use of a representative volume element or unit cell. The solution is based on a numerical approach using finite element method (FEM). The necessary basic equations for the piezoelectric material are introduced and ...
