This research investigates whether interactivity of home voice assistants can reduce the consumer's perceptions of intrusiveness when using these products because of their autonomy. To do so, the authors applied structural equation modeling to 607 questionnaires. The results show that autonomy has a quadratic effect on intrusiveness and usefulness, being more intense for high levels of autonomy. Interactivity reduces intrusiveness both directly and indirectly through brand trust, and interactivity ...

ABSTRACT In the coastal zone of central Veracruz, Mexico, we recorded the abundance of orchid plants growing on termite carton trails or directly on the peeling bark of Bursera fagaroides . Although only 19 percent of the surveyed trees contained termite carton trails, trees with termites hosted 92 percent of all orchid individuals. A disproportionate number of orchid seedlings occurred on termite cartons given the relative availability of carton and bark substrate. Our results show for the first ...

4,5-Diarylisoxazoles 1 are efficiently prepared by submitting enaminones 2, readily obtained from deoxybenzoins 3, to oximation conditions. This conversion implies an uncommon amine group exchange reaction. Preparation of 4-isoxazolines 5 and ring-opening transformations to β-keto nitriles 4 and 1,3-amino alcohol derivatives 7 are also described.

Non-human primates (NHPs) and humans share major biological mechanisms, functions, and responses due to their close evolutionary relationship and, as such, provide ideal animal models to study human diseases. RNA expression in NHPs provides specific signatures that are informative of disease mechanisms and therapeutic modes of action. Unlike the human transcriptome, the transcriptomes of major NHP animal models are yet to be comprehensively annotated. In this manuscript, employing deep RNA sequencing ...

The Egyptian Rousette bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus), a common fruit bat species found throughout Africa and the Middle East, was recently identified as a natural reservoir host of Marburg virus. With Ebola virus, Marburg virus is a member of the family Filoviridae that causes severe hemorrhagic fever disease in humans and nonhuman primates, but results in little to no pathological consequences in bats. Understanding host-pathogen interactions within reservoir host species and how it differs from hosts ...

This article examines the personalisation–privacy paradox through the privacy calculus lens in the context of smart home speakers. It also considers the direct and moderating role of humanisation in the personalisation–privacy paradox. This characteristic refers to how human the device is perceived to be, given its voice's tone and pacing, original responses, sense of humour, and recommendations. The model was tested on a sample of 360 users of different brands of smart home speakers. These users ...

Clonal expansion is a process in which a single organism reproduces asexually, giving rise to a diversifying population. It is pervasive in nature, from within-host pathogen evolution to emergent infectious disease outbreaks. Standard phylogenetic tools rely on full-length genomes of individual pathogens or population consensus sequences (phased genotypes). Although high-throughput sequencing technologies are able to sample population diversity, the short sequence reads inherent to them preclude ...

Biogas and biohydrogen, due to their renewable nature and zero carbon footprint, are considered two of the gaseous biofuels that will replace conventional fossil fuels. Biogas from anaerobic digestion must be purified and converted into high-quality biomethane prior to use as a vehicle fuel or injection into natural gas networks. Likewise, the enrichment of biohydrogen from dark fermentation requires the removal of CO2, which is the main pollutant of this new gaseous biofuel. Currently, the removal ...

The aim of this work is to carry out a thermoeconomic analysis of a single and double-effect LiBr/H2O absorption refrigeration system. The methodology of functional analysis with negentropy is used. The exergetic cost of the main product, the cooling cost, was calculated as a function of the exergy of the heat source. Two cases were analyzed for each system: the first considers a direct-fired system while the second considers a hot-water driven system for the single-effect system and a steam-driven ...

Most of the macroinfauna from sandy beaches is highly mobile, emerging out of the sediment when the tide rises, and using the swash to migrate up and down the beach face or feed (searching for prey or carrion). After swash excursions, they usually burrow back into the sediment, maintaining zonation at low tide. Therefore, the different species abilities to emerge, move around and burrow under different swash climates and sediment conditions are expected to influence observed distribution patterns. ...

Mya arenaria was introduced to Grays Harbor (Washington) during the 1880s. Maximum size of members of the extant population is much smaller than that of clams dead in situ in preceding decades and nowadays found forming extensive 'death assemblages'. This could reflect differences in growth rate and/or maximum age (i.e. survival rate). Major 'growth marks' (seen in shell sections as translucent bands) are formed in the shell of extant clams during winter, when temperature and salinity are at their minima. ...

Pseudoaneurysms and aneurysms are abnormal dilatations of the vessel lumen. Pseudoaneurysm is a perfused hematoma contained by the adventitia and perivascular tissues that is in communication with the lumen of an adjacent artery or vein. Aneurysm is a dilatation of the vessel lumen involving all three layers of the blood vessel wall. Renal artery aneurysms (RAA) are uncommon but the widespread use of cross-sectional imaging and incidental detection of RAA may result in an increasing number of cases ...

Cognitive radios represent a promising technique to address the problem of efficient spectrum utilisation. However, their performance is limited by their capability to sense the spectrum. This letter proposes a fair comparison between soft and hard spectrum sensing schemes, based on the practical assumption of limited time resources, which was never explored in previous studies. By considering the achieved detection probability as the performance metric and the false alarm probability as constraint, ...
