GroundBIRD is a ground-based experiment for a precise observation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarizations. To achieve high sensitivity at large angular scales, we adopt three features in this experiment: fast rotation scanning, microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID), and cold optics. The rotation scanning strategy has the advantage to suppress 1/f noise. It also provides a large sky coverage of 40%, which corresponds to the large angular scales of $$l \sim 6$$ . This allows us to constrain ...

We have been developing a terahertz camera based on antenna-coupled superconducting resonators, the so-called microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs), and a silicon lens array. The MKID consists of a coplanar waveguide coupled to a double slot antenna and is patterned on a high-quality aluminum film grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The camera is sensitive at frequencies of 200-240 GHz. Its bandwidth is limited by the impedance properties of the double slot antenna. The design, fabrication, ...

We designed and fabricated a microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) using a niobium nitride (NbN) symmetric spiral resonator array. Previously we revealed that a rewound spiral structure works as not only a high-Q half-wavelength resonator but also as a broadband terahertz antenna. We conducted simulations for a 9 resonator array assuming NbN as the superconducting material and sapphire as the dielectric substrate, and obtained a maximum attenuation of over 30 dB and unloaded quality factors ...

SUMMARY In 2013, IARC classified the radiofrequency emitted by mobile phones exposure as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). After this classification, several studies were carried out to confirm and to robust or to reject IARC conclusions. Aim of this work was to draw a synthesis of principal scientific evidencies published till September 2019. The analysis of published results could not indicate clear risk profiles, nor surely confirm or reject the hypothesis that exposures to radiofrequency ...

We investigated the relationship between loaded quality factor (QL) and responsivity of microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) using a dual-function spiral strip (DFSS). Three types of DFSSs with different QL values were designed, and the S 21 properties were simulated when kinetic inductance of a superconductor was changed by using a 2.5-dimentional simulator. The simulated results showed that a very high Q L value was not necessarily required. The resonator frequencies of the 25-MKID array ...

Polarized patterns in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation contains rich knowledge for early stage of the universe. In particular their odd-parity patterns at large angular scale (> 1°), primordial B-modes, are smoking-gun evidence for the cosmic inflation. The GroundBIRD experiment aims to detect these B-modes with a ground-based apparatus that includes several novel devices: a high-speed rotational scan system, cold optics, and microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs). We plan to start ...

A lumped element kinetic inductance detector (LeKID) relying on a superconducting resonator is a promising candidate for sensing high energy particles such as neutrinos, X-rays, gamma-rays, alpha particles, and the particles found in the dark matter owing to its large-format capability and high sensitivity. To develop a high energy camera, we formulated design rules based on the experimental results from niobium (Nb)-based LeKIDs at 1 K irradiated with alpha-particles of 5.49 MeV. We defined the design ...

Our understanding of physics at very early Universe, as early as 10 −35 s after the Big Bang, relies on the scenario known as the inflationary cosmology. Inflation predicts a particular polarization pattern in the cosmic microwave background, known as the B -mode yet the strength of such polarization pattern is extremely weak. To search for the B -mode of the polarization in the cosmic microwave background, we are constructing an off-axis rotating telescope to mitigate systematic effects as well as ...

We propose a novel microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) named spiral-MKID typified by a rewound spiral strip structure suitable for terahertz applications. The superconducting rewound strip works as a high-Q half wavelength microwave resonator as well as a broadband terahertz antenna. The spiral-MKIDs fabricated with NbN films reveal loaded quality factors of the order of 104 at 3 K. NbN is one of the promising materials suitable for working on a convenient 4K-refrigerator. We also discuss ...
