The aim of this study was to characterize the cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) through Morlet wavelet transforms of heart rate variability (HRV) and compare to Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis. Cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic blockades were studied in conscious rats. Morlet and FFT were performed in (1) high-frequency band (HF: 0.6 to 3 Hz), (2) mid-frequency band (MF: 0.3 to 0.6 Hz), and (3) low-frequency band (LF: 0.07 to 0.3 Hz). While cardiac sympathetic inhibition with metoprolol ...

The indiscriminate use of antimicrobial drugs has increased the spectrum of exposure of these organisms. In our studies, these phenolic compounds were evaluated: gallic acid, caffeic acid and pyrogallol. The antibacterial, antifungal and modulatory of antibiotic activities of these compounds were assayed using microdilution method of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) to bacteria and Minimum Fungicide Concentration (MFC) to fungi. The modulation was made by comparisons of the MIC and MFC of the ...

The secular use of plants in popular medicine has emerged as a source for the discovery of new compounds capable of curing infections. Among microbial resistance to commercial drugs, species such as Piper diospyrifolium Kunth, which are used in popular therapy, are targets for pharmacological studies. With this in mind, antimicrobial experiments with the essential oil from the P. diospyrifolium (PDEO) species were performed and its constituents were elucidated. The oil compounds were identified by ...

This was a cross-sectional observational study on 47 patients (age 36 ± 9.2 standard deviation) diagnosed with mild (23.4%), moderate (34%), or severe (42.6%) OSA. HRV was studied by linear measures of fast Fourier transform, nonlinear Poincaré analysis, and detrended ...

Brachial plexus injuries are a major indication for shoulder arthrodesis. However, there is no consensus concerning the optimal position of the glenohumeral joint for fusion. Between 1997 and 2008, 19 shoulder arthrodeses were performed using pelvic reconstruction plates. The radiographic and functional characteristics of 13 patients of mean age 46 years were examined at a mean of 101 months after arthrodesis. Neuropeptide and neurotrophin receptors are increasingly important molecular targets in cancer. Scientific findings indicate that compounds blocking gastrin-releasing peptide receptors (GRPR) or tropomyosin receptor kinase (Trk) receptors are likely to have antiproliferative activities against cancer cells.
