Quenched and annealed samples of a high carbon steel implanted with 105 keV nitrogen at a nominal dose of 3 × 1017 ions cm-2 and current densities of 50, 100 and 200 μA cm-2 were analysed by a nuclear technique to measure the retained dose. The dose thus measured depends on the beam current density as well as on the initial steel structure: it decreases with the beam current density and is systematically lower in quenched steel than that in the annealed steel. Microhardness measurements and conversion ...

The fracture toughness properties of duplex stainless steels (DSS) are strongly reduced by intermetallic phases, precipitating at 600–1000°C. In this investigation, the embrittlement effect induced by a low content of these phases has been studied in a 2205 DSS, by means of instrumented Charpy V impact testing. Different contents of intermetallic phases have been produced by isothermal treatments at 800–950°C. The microstructure has been analysed by scanning electron microscope/backscattered electron ...

In the present paper the results of secondary phases determination and quantification in ZERON100 duplex steel, heat treated at 850–1000°C for 180–2400 s, are presented. During the isothermal heat treatments, at 850°C, the χ phase is the only phase to precipitate at α/ γ boundaries and triple points, while at 900 and 950°C, χ phase is the first phase to precipitate after 180 s, followed by σ phase 300 s later. At all the temperatures the total amount of secondary phases is ∼3 after <600 s aging.

This paper concerns the phase transformation induced by heat treatment and cold rolling in four duplex stainless steel. In 2205 and 2507 , during the isothermal heat treatments, chi-phase precipitates as small particles at the ferrite/austenite boundaries, followed by sigma precipitation. At the lowest temperature the formation kinetic of chi-phase is favoured, with the increasing of time and temperature a progressive transformation of chi to sigma occurs and the kinetic of sigma is favoured. During ...

The Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System OSIRIS is the scientific camera system onboard the Rosetta spacecraft (Figure 1). The advanced high performance imaging system will be pivotal for the success of the Rosetta mission. OSIRIS will detect 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from a distance of more than 106 km, characterise the comet shape and volume, its rotational state and find a suitable landing spot for Philae, the Rosetta lander. OSIRIS will observe the nucleus, its activity ...

Martensitic stainless steels are widely used for their good mechanical properties in combination with satisfactory corrosion resistance. However, in recent times the need for excellent properties in specific applications (for example self-drilling and -tapping screws) has led to the research of significant performance improvements of these steels. In this paper, the heat treatment optimization, the mechanical and corrosion properties of a Ni–Mo martensitic stainless steel, designed for this purpose, ...

TiB/Ti-6Al-4V metal-matrix composite (MMC) layers were produced on Ti-6Al-4V substrates by laser cladding. A TiB2/Ti powder mixture was used as a precursor to obtain a dispersion of TiB needles in the Ti alloy matrix, with the aid of an exothermic reaction between TiB2 and Ti. A eutectic microstructure was obtained that consisted of an extremely homogeneous dispersion of TiB eutectic needles in the Ti alloy matrix, having a volume fraction as high as 0.33. Also, an equilibrium-like microstructure ...

Abstract In this paper the effect of several parameters, such as temperature, time of immersion, cerium ions and hydrogen peroxide concentration, pH of the conversion solution, on the composition and morphology of the conversion layer are investigated as well as on its corrosion resistance in chloride environments. The cerium‐based chemical conversion coatings ennobles the corrosion potential and inhibits both the cathodic and anodic reactions rate. Using a cerium (III) chloride solution a not homogeneous ...

A simplified model describing the cooling behaviour and the solidification of undercooled droplets in gas atomization has been developed. The resulting computer code can predict the cooling behaviour both in the liquid and in the solid state for any powder size. The droplet velocity in the collecting chamber as well as its temperature, solid fraction and cooling rate can be predicted as a function of the characteristics of the processed alloy, the superheating of the melt, the atomizing gas, its ...

Several studies have evolved to deal with the determinants of stock market volatility. However, there exists a gap in literature with regards to the interrelation among the broad categories of factors that trigger stock market reaction namely company fundaments, technical factors and market sentiments. This paper provides a holistic and comprehensive theoretical review of drivers of stock markets’ reaction as well as designs an interrelated conceptual framework of the factors that influence investors’ ...

We demonstrate that muon tomography can be used to precisely measure the properties of various materials. The materials which have been considered have been extracted from an experimental blast furnace, including carbon (coke) and iron oxides, for which measurements of the linear scattering density relative to the mass density have been performed with an absolute precision of 10%. We report the procedures that are used in order to obtain such precision, and a discussion is presented to address the ...

For CuNi alloy droplets processed by containerless solidification under levitation, the crystallographic texture is strongly correlated with the microstructure seen in optical metallography and with the undercooling at which solidification started. Systematic analysis of the texture is useful in understanding the development of the microstructure, in particular whether it is dendritic or grain-refined. The variation, with undercooling, of orientation spread in dendritic samples enables texture ...

Inert-gas atomization, using nitrogen as the atomizing medium, has been used to process a series of Fe-Ni alloys. The weight distributions of the powders were bi-modal with relative maxima in the 38 and 60–90 μm ranges. Droplet cooling rates were calculated and the final solidification microstructures were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The smallest droplets were predominantly dendritic with the largest droplets being a mixture of ...

Ni–Cu droplets were processed by electromagnetic levitation, in a drop-tube and by atomization. The droplet diameters varied from 30 μm to 7 mm, and the entire composition range was studied. Most microstructures observed were coarse-dendritic or refined-equiaxed. Microstructure-selection maps have been constructed for the drop-tube and atomization techniques showing the predominant microstructure as a function of composition and droplet size. From the results on levitated droplets, a selection map ...

Fe–Ni droplets (Ni content 0–30 at.%) were containerlessly processed by electromagnetic levitation, in a drop-tube or by atomization. The droplet diameter varied from 10 μm to 7 mm. The competition between the formation of b.c.c. and c.c.p. phases is elucidated by studies of the recalescence behaviour and the dendrite growth velocities as a function of undercooling. For levitation the results are summarized in a phase-selection map. For droplets produced in the spray methods, a selection map was ...

This study examined the moderating effect of organisational culture (OC) moderation on the relationship between interpersonal trust (IT; trust in management and trust in peers) and employees' affective commitment (AC). Participants were 295 employees of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Ghana (female = 42%; age range = 18–55). The employees completed the measures of IT, OC, AC, and employee performance. Moderation analysis of the data utilising structural equation modelling revealed that OC completely ...

This study investigates the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on customer loyalty and explores the role of customer engagement. The moderating role of gender is also examined. A total of 348 valid responses collected via the intercept approach from life insurance customers in Ghana were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results suggest that CSR dimensions (economic, environmental, and social responsibility) positively impact customer loyalty. Also, the results indicate ...
