On the other hand, if a physician is interested in performing a randomized, controlled trial to determine rigorously which of two widely used antibiotics is more effective at treating bronchitis, he ...

Eight hundred healthy female infants presenting for routine care were systematically screened for bacteriuria from early infancy to 2 years of age. The initial urinary tract infection was established in 29 infants, 3.6% of the series, at a median age of 9 months. Continued systematic screening of 25 of these 29 infants with bacteriuria to 6 years of age revealed recurrent infection in nine of them and the development of pyelonephritis in three. Recurrent episodes of infection occurred at close intervals ...

Evidence has accumulated that a syndrome of facial cleft and other malformations, particularly minor ones of the extremities, occur in offspring of women with seizure disorders treated with anticonvulsants. Spidel and Meadow7 described the syndrome, and others have emphasized the minor skeletal abnormalities. One of our children may be included in this catagory.

The effects of fault processes on rocks commonly include a lowered magnetic susceptibility and an increased predisposition to erosion. We present a workflow that uses these characteristics of faults and geological observations to interpret a 3D fault network. The location of faults on the topographic surface is first interpreted by a multi-layer lineament mapping method that includes geological and geophysical data sets. We then demonstrate how magnetic intensity data can be used to estimate the ...

Methane hydrates, widely found in permafrost and deep marine sediments, have great potential as a future energy source. Conventional production schemes perform poorly for challenging hydrate reservoirs with low permeability. We propose an efficient production scheme by combining hydraulic fracturing from horizontal wells and hot water circulation through fractures. A fully coupled thermo-hydro-chemical (THC) model is developed to simulate the key physical processes during gas production from a hydrate ...
