By employing elevated pressures in the ion source of a quadrupole mass filter, it is shown that D3S+ does not transfer a deuteron to D2O and that D3O+ transfers a deuteron to D2S. Studies were carried out in most instances under conditions where the reactant ion undergoes 30–60 collisions before reacting. Thus, most excess energy should have been removed. The transfer of deuteron from D3O+ to D2S appears to go to equilibrium with an equilibrium constant of 14.4 which corresponds to a heat of reaction ...

Abstract The present study examines sources of the interannual variability in salinity on the Newfoundland continental shelf observed in a 40‐year time series from an oceanographic station known as Station 27. Specifically, we investigate, through lag‐correlation analysis, the a priori hypotheses that the salinity anomalies at Station 27 are determined by freshwater runoff anomalies from Hudson and Ungava bays and by ice‐melt anomalies in Hudson Bay and on the Labrador Shelf. Interannual variations ...

Male anadromous Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, fatally injured mature male parr during spawning. The wound consisted of three parallel cuts which exposed musculature on one side of the parr either directly below or immediately posterior to the base of the dorsal fin. The spacing of the cuts matched the spacing of the anadromous male's lingual and mandibular teeth. The wounding of parr in this manner is consistent with the observation of larger males vigorously shaking smaller males between their ...

We tested two hypotheses concerning geographical variation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) life histories: (1) mean age at first reproduction is positively correlated with growth rate at sea and (2) within—population variation in age at first reproduction first increases and then decreases with latitude. Data on growth and age at first reproduction were compiled from 41 populations in eastern North America. Data reliability was checked by a redetermination of ages based on scale examination. The proportion ...

The feasibility of using scale characteristics to detect maturation as parr of anadromous male Atlantic salmon was examined. Smolt age and growth rate were found to be reliable indicators of prior maturation, whereas scale morphology did not differ between maturation phenotypes. Although determination of prior maturation was not 100% efficient, the resulting selection intensities would allow for effective artificial selection against anadromous males which had matured as parr.

The covariation of growth and maturation in male Atlantic salmon parr, Salmo salar, produces a relationship characterized by a size threshold below which individuals generally do not mature. The threshold of 70–72 mm fork length is evident both within and among populations. Parr maturation can reduce growth during the second year of life by an average of 4.0%. Among-year variation in growth rate affects the yearly incidence of maturation for males at age 1 + but has no detectable effect on the total ...

AbstractWe test the hypothesis that the survival of fish eggs and larvae is reduced by wind-driven transport off the continental shelf. A simple Lagrangian model including Ekman dynamics and vertically migrating larvae is developed to determine the cross-shelf movement of eggs and larvae in a two-layer stratified ocean; long-shelf movements are neglected. Wind stress calculated from 6-hr geostrophic winds for 1946 to 1986 is used in the study. Much of the variability in Ekman transport occurred ...

Population models are needed to assess the threats to species at risk and to evaluate alternative management actions. Data to support modeling is limited for many species at risk, and commonly used approaches generally assume stationary vital rates, a questionable assumption given widespread ecosystem change. We describe a modeling approach that can be applied to time series of length composition data to estimate vital rates and test for changes in these rates. Our approach uses stage-structured ...

Ongoing declines in production of the world's fisheries may have serious ecological and socioeconomic consequences. As a result, a number of international efforts have sought to improve management and prevent overexploitation, while helping to maintain biodiversity and a sustainable food supply. Although these initiatives have received broad acceptance, the extent to which corrective measures have been implemented and are effective remains largely unknown. We used a survey approach, validated with ...

Abstract Aim Biodiversity is declining at accelerating rates. Understanding past and ongoing changes to biodiversity is paramount in prioritizing conservation action and restoring functional ecosystems. Yet long‐term, systematic data on the distribution and abundance of species are sparse. For many organisms, specimen collections and anecdotal accounts of chance sightings or captures constitute the only source of information. Such data have the potential to provide valuable insights on long‐term ...

In many large pelagic animals, observing behavior is limited to observation by radio or satellite telemetry. In many cases, discriminating different behaviors from telemetry data has been a key, but often elusive, goal. Here we use state–space models (SSMs) to fit a correlated random walk (CRW) model that switches between two unobserved behavioral states (nominally foraging and traveling) to 41 male and 43 female adult grey seal ( Halichoerus grypus ) satellite telemetry tracks. The SSM results reveal ...

Recruitment variability is commonly associated with fluctuations in abundance of marine fish populations. Previous studies have focussed on stock-specific correlative or mechanistic models or on comparisons of recruitment variations of several stocks or species. The purpose of this study is to determine whether recruitment variability of commercial marine fish populations is associated with either size or the duration of early life history stages. The analysis was performed with data from 86 stocks ...
