BackgroundDuring pregnancy a feto-maternal exchange of cells through the placenta conducts to maternal microchimerism (Mc) in the child and fetal Mc in the mother. Because of this bidirectional traffic of cells, pregnant women have also acquired maternal cells in utero from their mother and could transfer grandmaternal (GdM) cells to their child through the maternal bloodstream during pregnancy. Thus, cord blood (CB) samples could theoretically carry GdMMc. Nevertheless this has never been demonstrated. ...

To assess the interrelation of clinical and procedural factors responsible for resteosis, 119 patients undergoing coronary arteriography were studied a mean of 5.8 ± 3 montas after successful multiple percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. In all clinical, angiographic and procedural variables, the 119 patients undergoing repeat catheterization were similar to the 87 patients that did not. Overall, restenosis occurred in 74 (34%) of 215 lesions. Sixty-three patients bad no restenosis, 44 had ...

Cord blood (CB) samples are increasingly used as a source of hematopoietic stem cells in transplantation settings. Maternal cells have been detected in CB samples and their presence is associated with a better graft outcome. However, we still do not know what influences the presence of maternal microchimerism (MMc) in CB samples and whether their presence influences CB hematopoietic cell composition. Here we test whether genetic, biological, anthropometric and/or obstetrical parameters influence the ...

A range of non-human animals frequently manipulate and explore objects in their environment, which may enable them to learn about physical properties and potentially form more abstract concepts of properties such as weight and rigidity. Whether animals can apply the information learned during their exploration to solve novel problems, however, and whether they actually change their exploratory behaviour to seek functional information about objects have not been fully explored. We allowed kea ( Nestor ...

We have shown that probucol reduces restenosis after balloon angioplasty. Whether probucol acted via prevention of neointimal formation or improvement in vascular remodeling could not be addressed by angiography and required the use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).Beginning 30 days before angioplasty, 317 patients were randomly assigned to receive probucol, multivitamins, combined treatment, or placebo. Patients were then treated for 6 months after angioplasty. IVUS examination was performed immediately ...

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is recognized as the primary cause of cardiac and cerebral ischaemic events. High structural plaque stresses have been shown to strongly correlate with plaque rupture. Plaque stresses can be computed with finite-element (FE) models. Current FE models employ homogeneous material properties for the heterogeneous atherosclerotic intima. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of intima heterogeneity on plaque stress computations. Two-dimensional FE models with homogeneous ...

Radioembolization is a field of interventional oncology that continues to evolve. The number of institutions adopting this approach is increasing; this trend is paralleled by a greater number of research investigations reported in the peer-reviewed literature. Therefore, developing standardization and reporting criteria therefore becomes of paramount importance in order to facilitate clear communications between investigators. The vehicle of a standards document provides the framework for reporting ...

Each sequence was divided in two, yielding 140 sequences of present lung sliding and 140 sequences of absent lung sliding. Of these 280 sequences, 40 were randomly repeated to assess intraobserver ...

Abstract Allogrooming in primates serves not only a hygienic function, but also plays a crucial role in maintaining strong affiliative bonds between group members, which in turn, underpin the emergence of cooperative behavior. In contrast, although allopreening occurs in many avian species, we know little about its social functions. Our study addresses this issue by investigating allopreening in a broad comparative data set including six corvid and nine parrot species. We assessed whether rates ...
