Background: Elevation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the hallmark of the dyslipidemia observed in hypothyroidism, but alterations on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma levels and metabolism are less understood. The aim of this study was to explore aspects of HDL metabolism and enzymes that act on HDL after a short period of overt hypothyroidism. Methods: Eighteen women (age 44 ± 11 years; body mass index 27.9 ± 5.2 kg/m2) were studied before total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer, when ...

The use of herbal supplements and alternative medicines has been increasing in the last decades. Despite popular belief that the consumption of natural products is harmless, herbs might cause injury to various organs, particularly to the liver, which is responsible for their metabolism in the form of herb-induced liver injury (HILI).

Epidemiological studies have shown a strong correlation between stressful events (nutritional, hormonal or environmental) in early life and development of adult diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular failure. It is known that gestation and lactation are crucial periods for healthy growth in mammals and that the sympathoadrenal system is markedly influenced by environmental conditions during these periods. We previously demonstrated that neonatal hyperleptinaemia in rats programmes ...

It has been found that fractal-like patterns are present in the temporal structure of the variability of healthy biological rhythms, while pathology and disease lead to their deterioration. Interestingly, it has recently been suggested that these patterns in biological rhythms are related with each other, reflecting overall health or lack of it, due to their interaction. However, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms responsible for such dependency remain unknown. In addition, this relationship ...

ABSTRACT Objectives: To describe the clinical and radiographic results of patients with traumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation treated with the Bristow-Latarjet procedure. Methods: Retrospective case series including 44 patients (45 shoulders) who underwent the Bristow-Latarjet procedure. The graft was fixed “standing” in 84% of the shoulders, and “lying” in 16%. Results: The follow-up was 19.25 ± 10.24 months. We obtained 96% of good results, with 2 recurrences presented as subluxation. Graft ...

The most widely accepted mechanism to explain astringency is the interaction and precipitation of salivary proteins by food tannins, in particular proline-rich proteins. However, other mechanisms have been arising to explain astringency, such as binding of tannins to oral cells. In this work, an experimental method was adapted to study the possible contribution of both salivary proteins and oral cells to astringency induced by grape seed procyanidin fractions. Overall, in the absence of salivary ...

Micaceous minerals are commonly found in phosphate ores, representing a challenge to selectively recover apatite. Aiming at identifying new flotation reagents for the separation of apatite from micaceous minerals, this study investigates the floatability of apatite, biotite and phlogopite in the presence of patauá oil-based collector. The chemical and mineralogical composition, electrokinetic properties and floatability of apatite, biotite and phlogopite in the presence of patauá fatty acid salts, ...

Host genetics are known to influence the gut microbiome, yet their role remains poorly understood. To robustly characterize these effects, we performed a genome-wide association study of 207 taxa and 205 pathways representing microbial composition and function in 7,738 participants of the Dutch Microbiome Project. Two robust, study-wide significant (P < 1.89 × 10−10) signals near the LCT and ABO genes were found to be associated with multiple microbial taxa and pathways and were replicated in two independent ...
