The juvenile index at a nursery area on the Gulf of Batabanó has proved to be a reliable predictor of total catch of the common lobster (Panulirus argus) fishery; up to 1 year in advance. Over the last 15 years (1982–1996) juveniles have been monitored in concrete-block shelters that permit wider variation in juvenile recruitment and thus a regional and seasonal prediction of catches. Since 1988, puerulus settlement has been measured by means of artificial-seaweed collectors, but the short ...

Mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) is probably the most common symptomatic pathologic entity--alone or mixed with other pathologic features--for seizures of temporal lobe origin. The pathophysiology of MTS, including any genetic influence, needs clarification. A characteristic ictal expression for seizures of MTS origin appears not to exist. The majority of patients (78%) with postresection MTS who are seizure-free have tightly localized interictal abnormalities restricted to F7/F8, Sp1/Sp2, T3/T4, and ...

We present a novel semi-supervised model, SS-Geo-GTM, which stems from a geodesic distance-based extension of Generative Topographic Mapping that prioritizes neighbourhood relationships along a generated manifold embedded in the observed data space. With this, it improves the trustworthiness and the continuity of the low-dimensional representations it provides, while behaving robustly in the presence of noise. In SS-Geo-GTM, the model prototypes are linked by the nearest neighbour to the data manifold ...

Summary: Isoflurane, an inhalation agent often used for general anesthesia during craniotomy, has been reported to suppress spike activity in the intraoperative electrocor‐ticogram (ECoG) during epilepsy surgery. We studied the effect of isoflurane concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.25% on the number of spike bursts per 5‐min epochs in 15 patients undergoing ECoG during epilepsy surgery. N 2 O in O 2 was maintained at 50% in 10 patients, at 60% in 2, and at 70% in 3. End tidal CO 2 concentration ...

The formulation of artificial diets is a fundamental issue in the development of lobster aquaculture. The impact of inclusion of clam, squid, chiton, and high-quality fish meal in a local fish meal-based diet on substrate metabolism and digestive proteases in juveniles Panulirus argus was evaluated by using two dietary protein levels, 25% and 35%, with 20% protein the basal level. The oxygen consumption/ammonia excretion ratio showed that lobsters fed clam and chiton diets used protein for oxidation ...

The fishing period for the lobster Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804) in Cuba usually starts in June, after a closed season from March to May. Between June and September (beginning of the fishing period), 88% of the catch is obtained by the use of the artificial shelters (pesqueros) in the Gulf of Batabano, while from October to February, a mass migration occurs and 70% of the catch is obtained using traps joined by nets (jaulones). The application of analytical methods based on size and age composition ...

Context-aware computing refers to an application’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances and respond based on the context of use. The estimation of user location is crucial to many context-aware applications. In this paper we propose a technique to infer user location in a wireless LAN inside buildings based on backpropagation neural networks. The strengths of the radio-frequency (RF) signals arriving from several access points in a wireless LAN are related to the position of the mobile device. ...

Caribbean lobsters Panulirus argus support a large commercial fishery that is one of the most important at world level. The biggest theoretical and practical problem for management of the fishery is the great variation and uncertainty in recruitment. We synthesize the results of 10 years’ study of the abundance variability of the complex life-cycle stages of spiny lobsters in the Gulf of Batabanó. A total of 38 109 pueruli and postpueruli (1988–1996) were caught with artificial seaweed ...

Epidemiologic associations suggest that populations consuming substantial amounts of dietary soy exhibit a lower risk of prostate cancer. A 20-week randomized, phase II, crossover trial was conducted in 32 men with asymptomatic prostate cancer. The crossover involved 8 weeks each of soy bread (SB) and soy-almond bread (SAB). The primary objective was to investigate isoflavone bioavailability and metabolite profile. Secondary objectives include safety, compliance, and assessment of biomarkers linked ...

There is a paucity of data regarding the microbial constituents of tobacco products and their impacts on public health. Moreover, there has been no comparative characterization performed on the bacterial microbiota associated with the addition of menthol, an additive that has been used by tobacco manufacturers for nearly a century. Approximate confidence intervals about the mean growth curve for carapace length, to include 95% of the population at any age, have been estimated for these models. Medical diagnosis can often be understood as a classification problem. In oncology, this typically involves differentiating between tumour types and grades, or some type of discrete outcome prediction. From the viewpoint of computer-based medical decision support, this classification requires the availability of accurate diagnoses of past cases as training target examples. The availability of such labeled databases is scarce in most areas of oncology, and especially so in neuro-oncology. In such ...

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) have a key function in regulating the function of cells due to their ability to transmit extracelullar signals. Given that the 3D structure and the functionality of most GPCRs is unknown, there is a need to construct robust classification models based on the analysis of their amino acid sequences for protein homology detection. In this paper, we describe the supervised classification of the different subtypes of class C GPCRs using support vector machines (SVMs). ...

Canonical correlation analysis is a popular statistical method for the study of the correlations between two sets of variables. Finding the canonical correlations between these datasets requires the inversion of their corresponding sample correlation matrices. When the number of variables is large compared to the number of experimental units it is impossible to calculate the inverse of these matrices directly and therefore it is necessary to add a multiple of the identity matrix to them. This procedure ...

Campylobacter is a leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States. Campylobacter infections have been associated with individual risk factors, such as the consumption of poultry and raw milk. However, no previous studies have evaluated the association between community risk factors and campylobacteriosis rates across multiple U.S. states. We ...
