This retrospective study describes 14 cases of intercostal nerve mononeuropathy (INM) found in 5,560 electromyography (EMG) exams performed between January 1991 and June 2004 in our University Hospital. Medical charts of all patients with history of thoracic pain and EMG diagnosis of intercostal mononeuropathy were reviewed. INM was detected in 14 patients; etiology was thoracic surgery in 6 (43%), post-herpetic neuropathy in 4 (28%), probable intercostal neuritis in 2 (14%), lung neoplasia in 1 (7%), ...

Abstract This paper reports the first complete theoretical study of substituent effects on the mechanism of the Baeyer– Villiger (BV) reaction in non‐polar solvents taking into account the lowest‐energy mechanism that has been proposed for this rearrangement which is non‐ionic and fully concerted. The BV reaction of p ‐substituted acetophenones, p ‐XC 6 H 4 COCH 3 (X = NO 2 , CN, H, CH 3 , OCH 3 ), with performic (PFA) and trifluoroperacetic (TFPAA) acids, catalyzed by formic (FA) and trifluoroacetic (TFAA) acids, ...

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is considered as a potentially lethal clinical condition, and the therapeutic options are limited. The antitumor effectiveness of the [Ru(l-Met)(bipy)(dppb)]PF6(1) and the [Ru(l-Trp)(bipy)(dppb)]PF6(2) complexes were evaluated in the peritoneal carcinomatosis model, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma–bearing Swiss mice. This is the first study that evaluated the effect of Ru(II)/amino acid complexes for antitumor activity in vivo. Complexes 1 and 2 (2 and 6 mg kg−1) showed tumor growth ...

Objectives To determine the effect of bovine lactoferrin on prevention of late-onset sepsis (LOS) and neurodevelopment delay. Study design Randomized, double-blind, controlled trial in neonates with a birth weight of 500-2000 g in 3 neonatal units in Lima, Peru, comparing bovine lactoferrin 200 mg/kg/day with placebo administered for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the first episode of culture-proven LOS or sepsis-associated death. Neurodevelopment delay was assessed by the Mullen Scales at 24 months corrected ...

Background The Atlixco municipality, Puebla State, at a mean altitude of 1840 m, was selected for a study of Fasciola hepatica infection in schoolchildren in Mexico. This area presents permanent water collections continuously receiving thaw water from Popocatepetl volcano (5426 m altitude) through the community supply channels, conforming an epidemiological scenario similar to those known in hyperendemic areas of Andean countries. Methodology and Findings A total of 865 6–14 year-old schoolchildren ...

In recent publications there has been considerable speculation about the possible role of a single water molecule in the catalysis of reactions between organic volatile compounds and OH radicals. In this work we reanalyze the effect of water in the acetaldehyde + OH reaction, using quantum chemistry and computational kinetics calculations in a pseudosecond order mechanism, at average atmospheric water concentrations and temperatures. We show that one water molecule definitely does not accelerate the ...

A comparison between a tetramolecular mechanism (J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 3031) and our previously proposed mechanism has been performed. The results show that the tetramolecular mechanism is less favored in terms of Gibbs free energy, and therefore, the reaction in acidic media is acid catalyzed. The role of the catalyst in the migration step has been corrected and discussed. A new transition state is proposed for this step. The change in the rate-determining step for the cyclohexanone + performic ...

The mechanism of the Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement is modelled for the reaction of propanone with trifluoroperacetic acid, catalyzed by trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane, using three DFT methods (B3LYP, BH&HLYP and MPWB1K) and MP2. These results are refined and used to calculate the overall reaction rate coefficient using conventional Transition State Theory. The excellent agreement between the calculated (1.00 x 10(-3) L mol(-1) s(-1)) and the experimental (1.8 x 10(-3) L mol(-1) s(-1)) rate ...

[structure: see text] A new transition state of the addition step in the Baeyer-Villiger reaction was found. The role of proton acceptor is played by the carbonyl oxygen atom, and the free energy barrier is 12.7 kcal/mol lower than that previously reported. This finding changes the mechanism for the acid catalysis and could be of interest for similar reactions in which it is known that such catalysis occurs, especially in nonpolar solvents.

Continuum solvation methods (SMD and IEF-PCM) and the MPWB1K functional are used. The reaction mechanism is studied in methanol and in acetonitrile as solvents. Our results indicate that the acid-catalyzed addition mechanism is stepwise, and the transition state (TS) is a contact ion- ...
