The current global escalation of refugees and involuntary migration, due to the effects of war and world disasters, makes it imperative to devise an effective approach to care for refugees. This article, therefore examines the problem of displacement from the perspective of missio Dei. It presents God’s active involvement in his creation, recreating it and providing particular care for the vulnerable and refugees.

We describe the bactericidal capacity of nanopatterned surfaces created by self-assembly of block copolymers. Distinct nanotopographies were generated by spin-coating with polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) followed by solvent vapor annealing. We demonstrate that the bactericidal efficiency of the developed coatings depends on the morphology and the chemistry of the surface: cylindrical nanotopographies presenting both blocks at the surface have stronger bactericidal effect on Escherichia ...

Technology has profoundly changed the way we learn and live. Indeed, such relationship appears to be quite complex, within IT contexts, and especially in socially and technologically rich learning environments, where related skills and learning are progressively required and fostered. Thus, if a satisfactory level of intellectual performance and social competence of a primary school pupil is indeed highly dependent on the type of participation that parents offer their children, IT, in general, and ...

In the present work, 199 patients with leprosy who underwent autopsy between 1970 and 1986 were retrospectively studied to determine the prevalence, types, clinical characteristics, and etiologic factors of renal lesions (RLs) in leprosy. Patients were divided into two groups: 144 patients with RLs (RL+) and 55 patients without RLs (RL-). RLs observed in 72% of the autopsied patients were amyloidosis (AMY) in 61 patients (31%), glomerulonephritis (GN) in 29 patients (14%), nephrosclerosis (NPS) in 22 patients ( ...

The validity of various electrocardiographic P wave measurements was tested in 48 patients by comparing them to left atrial dimensions determined by echocardiography (echo), a proved method of left atrial size estimation. Of all the measurements considered, only the width of the P wave (PW), the P terminal force in lead V1 (PV1), and the PW/PR segment ratio (PW/PR) showed statistically significant correlations with left atrial size measurements by echo, with r values of 0-746, 0-491, and 0-479, respectively. ...

Abstract Antibiotic resistant pathogens are a modern threat to the human health. As a worldwide spreading problem, there is an urgency for new strategies to minimize antibiotic resistance, particularly the super‐resistant strains. Here, the efficient design of carbohydrate‐coated silica nanoparticles is reported which specifically target Gram‐negative bacteria cells. The system is functionalized with gluconamide moieties and demonstrates increased binding ability to the bacterial membrane, enabling ...

The most widely accepted mechanism to explain astringency is the interaction and precipitation of salivary proteins by food tannins, in particular proline-rich proteins. However, other mechanisms have been arising to explain astringency, such as binding of tannins to oral cells. In this work, an experimental method was adapted to study the possible contribution of both salivary proteins and oral cells to astringency induced by grape seed procyanidin fractions. Overall, in the absence of salivary ...

The interaction between phenolic compounds and salivary proteins is considered the basis of the poorly understood phenomenon of astringency. Furthermore, this interaction is an important factor in relation to their bioavailability. In this work, interactions between anthocyanin and human salivary protein fraction were studied by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS and FIA-ESI-MS) and saturation-transfer difference (STD) NMR spectroscopy. Anthocyanins were able to interact with saliva proteins. The dissociation ...

Cutaneous Larva migrans is a very common disease in tropical regions. In the oral mucosa, the infection occurs in the same way as in the skin, but it is rarer. This report describes two cases of Larva migrans in the oral mucosa. The first case was in a 27-year-old woman who presented an erythematous plaque located on the buccal mucosa, extending to a posterior direction, following a linear pattern, to other areas of the mouth. After incisional biopsy of the anterior-most portion of the lesion, morphological ...

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) occurs when ovaries primed with follicle-stimulating hormone/leuteinizing hormone (LH) are subsequently exposed to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The ultimate pathophysiological step underlying this clinical picture is increased vascular permeability (VP). With the administration of hCG, the expression vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) mRNA increases significantly rising to a maximum coinciding with peaked VP. Immunohistochemistry ...

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) typically occurs when ovaries are primed with FSH/LH and subsequently exposed to hCG. The ultimate pathophysiological step underlying this clinical picture is increased vascular permeability (VP). A search of the literature was carried out using PubMed and the authors' files. In rodents and humans, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) mRNA increases during ovarian stimulation. With the administration of hCG, ...

A PDPA system was set up, optimised and used to measure the time resolved characteristics of the droplets inside a spray produced by a common-rail diesel fuel injection system. Some preliminary tests are performed with gas flows to optimise the optical set-up. Parametric studies are performed to gain an understanding of the particle density limits of the system, and their dependence on PDPA system parameters. Then the diesel spray produced by a single-hole injector is measured, with the fuel pressure ...

Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) based on recombinant MSP1a and MSP2 from a Brazilian isolate of Anaplasma marginale were developed to detect antibodies against this rickettsia in cattle. The high sensitivities (99% for both tests) and specificities (100% for both tests) were confirmed with sera from cattle positive or negative for A. marginale antibodies, respectively, by immunofluorescent antibody test. By the analysis of 583 sera from cattle of three regions of the state of Pernambuco, ...

Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) based on recombinant major surface protein 5 (rMSP5) and initial body (IB) antigens from a Brazilian isolate of Anaplasma marginale were developed to detect antibodies against this rickettsia in cattle. Both tests showed the same sensitivity (98.2%) and specificities (100% for rMSP5 and 93.8% for IB ELISA) which did not differ statistically.
