Physiological levels of cortisol have been found to blunt neuroendocrine and metabolic responses to subsequent hypoglycemia in humans. The aim of this study was to determine whether cortisol acts directly on the brain to elicit this effect. A total of 41 conscious unrestrained Sprague-Dawley rats were studied during 2-day experiments. Day 1 consisted of two episodes of clamped 2-h hyperinsulinemic (30 pmol · kg−1 · min−1) hypoglycemia (2.8 ± 0.1 mmol/l; n = 12; ANTE HYPO), euglycemia (6.2 ± 0.1 mmol/l; n = 12; ...

After antecedent hypoglycemia, counterregulatory responses to subsequent hypoglycemia exhibit greater blunting in men than in women. Because physical exercise and hypoglycemia share multiple counterregulatory mechanisms, we hypothesized that prior exercise may also result in gender-specific blunting of counterregulatory responses to subsequent hypoglycemia. Thirty healthy subjects (15 women and 15 men; age, 28 ± 3 yr; body mass index, 23 ± 1 kg/m2) were studied during 2-d experiments. Day 1 consisted ...

The brain is targeted by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) during the course of untreated infection, leading to cognitive impairment, neurological damage and HIV encephalitis (HIVE). To study early dynamics of HIV entry into the brain, we examined a unique autopsy series of samples obtained from 15 untreated individuals who died in the presymptomatic stages of infection from non-HIV causes. HIV was detected and quantified by limiting dilution PCR and genetically characterized in the V3 region ...

Three experiments are reported. Performance in the first may be used to predict performance in the second and third. The first examined the effect of extroversion, neuroticism, sex, and time of day on performance on a group-administered hour-long auditory vigilance task (N = 160; times of day: 0800, 1000, 1400, and 2000 h). Performance was related to none of these variables, but the task did yield a significant decrement in performance during the first 12 min (p s<.05), and level of performance was well ...

During development inhibitor of DNA-bind-2 (Id2) regulates proliferation and differentiation. Id2 expression has been detected in cancer cells, yet its cellular function and validity as a therapeutic target remains largely unknown. Immunohistochemical analysis of colorectal cancer (CRC) specimens revealed that Id2 was undetectable in normal colonic mucosa, but occurs in 40% of primary tumors and in most CRC liver metastases (P<0.0001). Additionally, Id2 was expressed in all CRC cell lines assayed. ...

Approximately 1 million people are infected with HIV in Malawi, where AIDS is the leading cause of death in adults. By December 31, 2007, more than 141,000 patients were initiated on antiretroviral treatment (ART) by use of a public health approach to scale up HIV services. We analyzed national quarterly and longitudinal cohort data from October 2004 to December 2006 to examine trends in characteristics of patients initiating ART, end-of-quarter clinical outcomes, and 6- and 12-month survival probability. ...

Neuropilin-2 (NRP2) is a high-affinity kinase-deficient receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and semaphorin 3F. We investigated its function in human colorectal cancers.Immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting were used to assess NRP2 expression levels in colorectal tumors and colorectal cancer cell lines, respectively. HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells stably transfected with short hairpin RNA (shRNAs) against NRP2 or control shRNAs were assayed for proliferation by the tetrazolium ...

We present an investigation of the observed variations in the total dose tolerance of the emitter-base spacer and shallow trench isolation oxides in a commercial 200 GHz SiGe HBT technology. Proton, gamma, and X-ray irradiations at varying dose rates are found to produce drastically different degradation signatures at the various oxide interfaces. Extraction and analysis of the radiation-induced excess base current, as well as low-frequency noise, are used to probe the underlying physical mechanisms. ...
