Benedict Michael, Michael J. Griffiths, Julia Granerød, David Brown, Nicholas Davies, Ray Borrow, Tom Solomon,

Background Encephalitis is parenchymal brain inflammation due to infectious or immune-mediated processes. However, in 15–60% the cause remains unknown. This study aimed to determine if the cytokine/chemokine-mediated host response can distinguish infectious from immune-mediated cases, and whether this may give a clue to aetiology in those of unknown cause. Methods We measured 38 mediators in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients from the Health Protection Agency Encephalitis Study. Of serum ...

Persecutory delusions (strong unfounded fears that others intend harm to the person) occur in more than 70 % of the patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. This major psychotic experience is a key clinical target, for which substantial improvement in treatment is needed. Our aim is to use advances in theoretical understanding to develop a much more efficacious treatment that leads to recovery in at least 50 % of people with persistent persecutory delusions. Our cognitive conceptualisation is that persecutory ...

Synthetically important Diels–Alder reactions occur in high yield in novel Lewis acidic ambient temperature ionic liquids composed of choline chloride–MCl2 (1:2) (M = Zn or Sn). The liquids are not moisture-sensitive and after separation of the products they can be reused with no noticeable drop in activity.

Enrichment of a subset of CD4+CD45R0+CD7– T cells has been observed in HIV-infected individuals. We have investigated the ability of CD7+ and CD7– T cells to support replication of HIV and show that virus replicates preferentially in CD7+ cells. Several possible mechanisms that may underlie such differences in susceptibility to HIV were studied. Our data demonstrate that mitogen stimulation induces poor expression of CD25 and IL-2 in CD7– compared with CD7+ cells. We also show that uninfected CD7– ...

Gravity modelling of the Hikurangi Plateau, east of North Island, New Zealand, indicates the crust thickens from about 10 km in the north to about 15 km adjacent to the Chatham Rise. It appears to thicken by a lesser amount to the west, towards the Hikurangi Trough. The Chatham Rise crustal thickness is 23–26 km, thinning to the south towards the Bounty Trough and east of the Chatham Islands. The gravity models indicate the eastern margin of the Hikurangi Plateau intersects the Chatham Rise at about ...

The transforming function of human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E7 has been shown to depend on activities additional to the ability to bind RB. In this paper we describe two further properties of E7 which may also contribute to transformation, an association with a histone H1 kinase at the G2/M phase of the cell cycle and an ability to bind the RB-related protein p107. The region of E7 identified previously as important for RB binding was found to be involved in the association with the kinase ...

Three-dimensional N.M.R. correlation spectroscopy makes it possible to identify three chemical species, I, S and R that have resolved scalar couplings. This experiment can be implemented by applying two simultaneous selective radiofrequency pulses that are scanned independently through narrow frequency ranges (F 1 and F 2) encompassing the I and S-spin chemical shifts. Coherence transfer signals are detected in the form of a three-dimensional cross-peak at the R-spin frequency. This soft-pulse experiment ...
