Abstract The adsorption behaviour of ammonium ions and the structural features of layered proton trititanate were characterised by using Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy. It revealed that the intensity of the Raman band at 309 cm −1 , assigned to very long TiO bonds (0.22 nm), reduced, whereas the band at 890 cm −1 , assigned to very short TiO bonds (0.17 nm), increased slightly after the adsorption of ammonium ions (NH 4 + ). The adsorption of ammonium ions enlarged ...

Abstract Raman and infrared spectroscopies were used to characterise two samples of triclinic čejkaite Na 4 [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] and its synthetic trigonal analogue. The ν 3 (UO 2 ) 2+ mode is not Raman active, whereas both the ν 3 and ν 1 (UO 2 ) 2+ modes are infrared active. UO bond lengths in uranyls were calculated from the spectra obtained and compared with bond lengths derived from crystal structure analyses. From the higher number of bands related to the uranyl and carbonate vibrations, the presence of ...

Bayer hydrotalcites prepared using the seawater neutralisation (SWN) process of Bayer liquors are characterised using X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis techniques. The Bayer hydrotalcites are synthesised at four different temperatures (0, 25, 55, and 75 °C) to determine the effect of synthesis temperature on the thermal stability of the Bayer hydrotalcite structures and the mineralogical phases that form. The interlayer distance increased with increasing synthesis temperature, up to 55 °C, and ...

The hydrotalcite based upon manganese known as charmarite Mn4Al2(OH)12CO3·3H2O has been synthesised with different Mn/Al ratios from 4:1 to 2:1. Impurities of manganese oxide, rhodochrosite and bayerite at low concentrations were also produced during the synthesis. The thermal stability of charmarite was investigated using thermogravimetry. The manganese hydrotalcite decomposed in stages with mass loss steps at 211, 305 and 793 °C. The product of the thermal decomposition was amorphous material mixed ...

Abstract Hydrotalcites of formula Mg 6 (Al,Fe) 2 (OH) 16 (CO 3 )·4H 2 O formed by intercalation with the carbonate anion as a function of divalent/trivalent cationic ratio have been successfully synthesised. The XRD patterns show variation in the d‐spacing attributed to the size of the cation. Raman and infrared bands in the OH stretching region are assigned to (1) brucite layer OH stretching vibrations, (2) water stretching bands and (3) water strongly hydrogen bonded to the carbonate anion. Multiple (CO ...

Hydrotalcites containing carbonate, vanadate and molybdate were prepared by coprecipitation. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, and TG/DTA to determine the stability of the hydrotalcites synthesized. The thermal decomposition of carbonate hydrotalcites consist of two decomposition steps between 300 and 400°C, attributed to the simultaneous dehydroxylation and decarbonation of the hydrotalcite lattice. Water loss ascribed to dehydroxylation occurs in two decomposition steps, where ...

Thermal analysis complimented with evolved gas mass spectrometry has been applied to hydrotalcites of the pyroaurite–stitchtite series containing the carbonate anion prepared by co-precipitation and with varying Fe3+, Cr3+ trivalent cation ratio. The resulting materials were characterised by XRD, and TGA/DTG to determine the stability of the hydrotalcites synthesised. Hydrotalcites of formula Mg6(Cr0.8,Fe0.2)2(OH)16(CO3)·xH2O, Mg6(Cr0.6,Fe0.4)2(OH)16(CO3)·xH2O, Mg6(Cr0.4,Fe0.6)2(OH)16(CO3)·xH2O ...
