PROBLEM: CD8 T‐cells are present at a lower frequency in human decidua than in peripheral blood. Because transforming growth factor (TGF)‐β2 down‐regulates CD4 membrane expression, its contribution, as well as the contribution of TGF‐β1 and prostaglandin (PG) E2, to the modulation CD8 expression was studied using human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs). METHOD OF STUDY: PBLs were cultured with TGF‐β1, TGF‐β2, PGE 2, PGI 2, or day‐12 rabbit blastocoelic fluid (BF) that was or was not depleted of TGF‐ ...

In her 1962 paper on the Old English Bede Dorothy Whitelock examined some of the major differences between the Old English translation of Bede's Ecclesiastical Historys and its Latin original in an attempt to determine the connection, if any, between the translation and Alfred's educational reforms. Her paper provides a useful list of omissions in the Old English and discusses some of the principles guiding the translator in omitting passages. Whitelock, however, does not consider the function in ...

Targeting mosquitoes to target malaria Anopheline mosquitoes transmit the malaria parasite, but the insects themselves are prone to their own infections. Lovett et al. engineered a specific fungal pathogen of anophelines to carry insect-selective toxins. The effectiveness of this fungus for controlling mosquitoes was trialed in near-field conditions in Burkina Faso in a setup called MosquitoSphere. Approximately 75% of wild insecticide-resistant mosquitoes released into the environment became infected ...

The application of patristic biblical exegesis to medieval literature has produced some illuminating criticism in recent years. Unfortunately, the “allegorists” often fail to make use of one of the most important sources of traditional Christian thought and symbolism, the liturgy. Yet, medieval writers greatly enriched their work by drawing upon the liturgy as a source and inspiration, a fact demonstrated by a passage such as the Good Samaritan episode in Passus XVII of Piers Plowman.
