On 11 June 1959, the body of 12-year old Lynne Harper was discovered in a woodlot northeast of Clinton, Ontario. Although insect evidence was photographed and collected at the scene and autopsy, this evidence was not used in the 1959 trial. Instead, time of death was pinpointed to a 45-min window of 1900-1945 h on 9 June 1959 based on stomach content analysis. Based on circumstantial evidence and this time frame that he was the last suspect to see her alive, 14-year old Steven Truscott was convicted ...

Lyle Dick,

A case involving three men charged with gross indecency in Regina in 1895 serves to illustrate aspects of male same-sex experience in Western Canada's settlement era. This microhistory study situates the case within both local and wider political, legal, and social contexts, including the growing visibility of same-sex subcultures in Britain in the late nineteenth century. Men made up the majority of the population of frontier Regina, creating a male social environment that established a ...

Peter Donnelly,

Abstract In the case of Regina versus Adams [1996], DNA evidence seemed to suggest that there was a 1 in 200 million chance that an innocent person would match the DNA found at the crime scene. Peter Donnelly explains how he subsequently became involved in the case and found himself trying to explain Bayes's Theorem to judge and jury.

A wide spectrum of clinical manifestations has become a hallmark of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) COVID-19 pandemic, although the immunological underpinnings of diverse disease outcomes remain to be defined. We performed detailed characterization of B cell responses through high-dimensional flow cytometry to reveal substantial heterogeneity in both effector and immature populations. More notably, critically ill patients displayed hallmarks of extrafollicular B cell ...

Dawn Archer,

This paper explores the 1895 libel trial between Oscar Wilde (literary personality) and the Marquis of Queensbury (father of Wilde's close friend). Focussing on the lead defence counsel's cross-examination of Wilde (plaintiff), I demonstrate that Carson's FTAs are “aggressive” and, in some cases, “deliberately” so (cf. Bousfield, Impoliteness in interaction, John Benjamins, 2008: 72). However, as they do not breach the rules of the courtroom or involve an overt “intent to harm” (Goffman, Interaction ritual: ...
