Salmonids are generally considered to have a robust genetic sex determination system with a simple male heterogamety (XX/XY). However, spontaneous masculinization of XX females has been found in a rainbow trout population of gynogenetic doubled haploid individuals. The analysis of this masculinization phenotype transmission supported the hypothesis of the involvement of a recessive mutation (termed mal). As temperature effect on sex differentiation has been reported in some salmonid species, in this ...

Curcumin possesses wide-ranging anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties and its biological activity can be linked to its potent antioxidant capacity. Superparamagnetic maghemite (γ-Fe2 O3 ), called surface-active maghemite nanoparticles (SAMNs) were surface-modified with curcumin molecules, due to the presence of under-coordinated Fe(III) atoms on the nanoparticle surface. The so-obtained curcumin-modified SAMNs (SAMN@curcumin) had a mean size of 13±4 nm. SAMN@curcumin was characterized by transmission ...

Polyphenols represent a group of chemical substances common in plants, structurally characterized by the presence of one or more phenol units. Polyphenols are the most abundant antioxidants in human diets and the largest and best studied class of polyphenols is flavonoids, which include several thousand compounds. Numerous studies confirm that they exert a protective action on human health and are key components of a healthy and balanced diet. Epidemiological studies correlate flavonoid intake with ...

Naked maghemite nanoparticles, namely, surface active maghemite nanoparticles (SAMNs), characterized by a diameter of about 10 nm, possessing peculiar colloidal stability, surface chemistry, and superparamagnetism, present fundamental requisites for the development of effective magnetic purification processes for biomolecules in complex matrices. Polyphenolic molecules presenting functionalities with different proclivities toward iron chelation were studied as probes for testing SAMN suitability ...

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of inflorescence pruning on spiny coriander and determine the levels of antioxidants at different growth stages. Inflorescence pruning increased leaf biomass by 188%, although total biomass did not vary among treatments. Pruning altered the biomass partition, induced the earmarking of a higher percentage of photosynthates for the production of new leaves, and increased the leaf contents of reducing sugars, sucrose and soluble proteins. The contents ...

Sex determination is known to be male heterogametic in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; however, scattered observations that deviate from this rather strict genetic control have been reported. Here, we provide a detailed morphological and histological characterization of the gonadal differentiation and development (from 43 days postfertilization to 11 months of age) in an all-female (XX) population with a genetically governed masculinization phenotype. In comparison with control ...

Vertebrate evolution has been shaped by several rounds of whole-genome duplications (WGDs) that are often suggested to be associated with adaptive radiations and evolutionary innovations. Due to an additional round of WGD, the rainbow trout genome offers a unique opportunity to investigate the early evolutionary fate of a duplicated vertebrate genome. Here we show that after 100 million years of evolution the two ancestral subgenomes have remained extremely collinear, despite the loss of half of ...

Abstract Maintaining protein lipoylation is vital for cell metabolism. The H-protein encoded by GCSH has a dual role in protein lipoylation required for bioenergetic enzymes including pyruvate dehydrogenase and 2-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, and in the one-carbon metabolism through its involvement in glycine cleavage enzyme system, intersecting two vital roles for cell survival. Here, we report six patients with biallelic pathogenic variants in GCSH and a broad clinical spectrum ranging from neonatal ...

Heat shock protein (HSP) 104 is a highly conserved molecular chaperone that catalyzes protein unfolding, disaggregation and degradation under stress conditions. We characterized HSP104 gene structure and expression in Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite that causes Chagas' disease. The T. cruzi HSP104 is an 869 amino-acid protein encoded by a single-copy gene that has the highest sequence similarity (76%) with that of T. brucei and the lowest (23%) with that of the human protein. HSP104 transcripts ...

Formate dehydrogenases (FDHs) are of interest as they are natural catalysts that sequester atmospheric CO2, generating reduced carbon compounds with possible uses as fuel. FDHs activity in Escherichia coli strictly requires the sulphurtransferase EcFdhD, which likely transfers sulphur from IscS to the molybdenum cofactor (Mo-bisPGD) of FDHs. Here we show that EcFdhD binds Mo-bisPGD in vivo and has submicromolar affinity for GDP—used as a surrogate of the molybdenum cofactor's nucleotide moieties. ...

This study compared the efficacy and the adverse effects of controlled-release morphine (CRM) suspension (SAR 213) and CRM tablets (Moscontin) in the treatment of cancer pain. This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, crossover study was carried out on 52 patients. Each patient received both study treatments given at an equivalent dosage of morphine during each of two 7-day periods. The primary outcome variable was the severity of pain assessed three times daily by means of a visual ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a method of treating precancerous diseases and malignant neoplasms. The efficacy of PDT depends on different parameters such as light dosimetry, oxygen availability, and photophysical and physical-chemical properties of the photosensitizer. In PDT, a photosensitizer is activated using light to promote oxygen photosensitization and cellular transport plays a key role in the reach of it to the desired tissue. In particular, to know the effectiveness of the drug delivery ...

Hydroperoxides are major products in the autoxidation of fuels and play a central role in oxidation kinetics. Their presence affects the oxidation rate, even at low concentrations, and, in turn, the thermal stability of fuels. Standard techniques for the quantification of hydroperoxides (ROOH) in fuels involve the reduction of ROOH by I−, yielding iodine (I2), which can be quantified by titration. The ASTM titration method of ROOH is known to be poorly reproducible and have inadequate lower detection ...
