Two patients with antrochoanal polyps with pseudosarcomatous changes noted on histologic examination of the specimens are reported. The bizarre cellular structure of the lesions initially caused confusion of these benign polyps with sarcomas. The surgeon and pathologist are alerted to the occurrence of these changes, and caution is recommended in readily accepting a diagnosis of malignant neoplasm in otherwise typical-appearing antrochoanal polyps.

"Lethal midline granuloma" should be only a clinical term for rapidly evolving destructive lesions of the nose and the deep facial tissues. Such clinical presentation—after specific infections and carcinomas have been excluded—may occur in 3 different clinicopathologic entities: midline malignant reticulosis (polymorphic reticulosis), Wegener's granulomatosis, and malignant lymphoma of one of the accepted histologic types. One representative case of each of these is reported here, histologic criteria ...

A malignant pleural mesothelioma has shown ultrastructural endocrine type differentiation which may be the morphologic basis for the hypoglycemic syndrome accompanying some of these tumors. The use of electron microscopy in diffuse pleural tumors suspected of being mesotheliomas at the time of biopsy may be of help in distinguishing them from metastatic carcinomas. The ultrastructural examination reveals the biphasic, fibroblastic and epithelial features of mesotheliomas to greater advantage than ...

Antibody binding sites in Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum were determined by direct and indirect fluorescent antibody technics. Binding sites on embryonated eggs, freshly hatched second stage larvae, and larvae isolated from and within the lungs and livers of experimentally infected mice, as well as sections of adult worms were investigated. Specific fluorescent staining was observed in oral, anal, cuticular, and excretory pore precipitates of larvae isolated from tissues and in the cuticle of whole ...

The goal of this work was to apply the Quasi-chemical primary model (a system of four ordinary differential equations that derives from a hypothetical four-step chemical mechanism involving an antagonistic metabolite) in the study of the evolution of yeast and lactic acid bacteria populations during the storage of Manzanilla-Aloreña table olives subjected to different mixtures of ascorbic acid, sodium metabisulphite and NaCl. Firstly, the Quasi-chemical model was applied to microbial count data to ...

The liver was visualized on a routine bone scan performed with 99mTc-pyrophosphate. There was laboratory evidence of liver cell necrosis and this was confirmed at autopsy a week later. The radionuclide is thought to have been taken up by the necrotic liver cells. The possibility that the necrotic liver may be consistently visualized by bone-seeking radionuclides deserves further exploration.

Hepatorenal tyrosinaemia (Tyr 1) is a rare inborn error of tyrosine metabolism. Without treatment, patients are at high risk of developing acute liver failure, renal dysfunction and in the long run hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of our study was to collect cross-sectional data. Via questionnaires we collected retrospective data of 168 patients with Tyr 1 from 21 centres (Europe, Turkey and Israel) about diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and outcome. In a subsequent consensus workshop, we discussed ...

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple ...

Rene A. Echevarria,

This paper is devoted to the numerical solution of some semilinear elliptic systems with nonlinear discontinuities. The motivation is the modelling of single, irreversible, nonisothermic stationary reactions of zero order. The numerical solution is achieved through an iterative procedure. This uses exact regularization. We justify the convergence of the algorithm and, also, we present some numerical results.

Rene A. Echevarria,

We present several algorithms for the computation of the solution to some semilinear elliptic problems with discontinuous nonlinearities. These are related to the equilibrium of steady vortex pairs. We illustrate with numerical experiments. First, we consider a problem which possesses an equivalent variational formulation. Then, by analogy, we propose an algorithm in the context of a nonvariational problem.

Rene A. Echevarria,

We illustrate with numerical experiments the behavior of certain algorithms based on exact regularization. First, we consider an elliptic PDE with a nonlinear discontinuity. Then, we deal with a semilinear elliptic problem which can be used to model the equilibrium of a confined plasma.

Routine performance of a dynamic study as part of the liver scan results in a significant rate of discovery (19%) of intraabdominal abnormalities such as aortic aneurysms, cystic masses, ischemic intestinal diseases and collateral circulation. The procedure aids in the demonstration of space-occupying hepatic lesions and is often decisive in the diagnosis of chronic liver disease. Alterations in the perfusion of the liver as reflected in the dynamic scan may have a predictive value in the course ...
