Abstract This study quantifies the impact of atmospheric rivers (ARs) on precipitation in southern South America. An AR detection algorithm was developed based on integrated water vapor transport (IVT) from 6-hourly CFSR reanalysis data over a 16-yr period (2001–16). AR landfalls were linked to precipitation using a comprehensive observing network that spanned large variations in terrain along and across the Andes from 27° to 55°S, including some sites with hourly data. Along the Pacific (west) coast, ...

Abstract Extreme rainfall events are thought to be one of the major threats of climate change given an increase of water vapor available in the atmosphere. However, before projecting future changes in extreme rainfall events, it is mandatory to know current patterns. In this study we explore extreme daily rainfall events along central-southern Chile with emphasis in their spatial distribution and concurrent synoptic-scale circulation. Surface rain gauges and reanalysis products from the Climate ...

A major storm impacted the subtropical Andes during 28–31 January 2021 producing 4-days accumulated precipitation up to 100 mm over central-south Chile. These are high accumulations even for winter events but the storm occurred in the middle of the summer when precipitation is virtually absent, conferring it an extraordinary character. Similar storms have occurred only 2–3 times in the past century. The January 2021 event included periods of high rainfall intensity, hail and lighting, causing dozens ...

Abstract In late May 2019, at least seven tornadoes were reported within a 24-h period in southern Chile (western South America, 36°–38°S), including EF1 and EF2 events causing substantial damage to infrastructure, dozens of injuries, and one fatality. Despite anecdotal evidence and chronicles of similar historical events, the threat from tornadoes in Chile was regarded with skepticism until the 2019 outbreak. Herein, we describe the synoptic-scale features instrumental in the development of these ...

The presence of a condensate in dryer cylinders during the startup produces an important increase of the required torque and power that adversely affects the drive and mechanical components of the drive train. This paper presents a complete evaluation of the condensate effects in an experimental setup with a 380-mm-diameter cylinder, during operation without and with spoiler bars, and covering from 1% up to 30% of condensate load, and up to 500 r/min. Sets of pictures showing the condensate profile ...

Fish farming crops are constantly exposed to infectious diseases due to intensive production conditions under which microorganisms develop and spread easily, resulting in severe economic losses. The massive use of antibiotics to control these diseases has lead to the accumulation of residues and the development of drug resistance. Consequently, it is urgent to develop new pharmacological tools to stimulate protective immune responses in salmonids to combat infectious diseases. We evaluated the immunostimulant ...

The productivity parameters of 2 Pleurotus spp. cultivated with two mixtures of wheat straw (WS) and peat moss (MG) were evaluated, the chemical composition of the mushrooms and also the antioxidant, antibacterial activities of hexanic extracts of the fruit bodies were determined. Pleurotus strains were fructified using the mixture 1 (60% of WS + 40% of MG) obtained the highest biological efficiencies, production rates and yields. The strain of Pleurotus ostreatus (XC005) cultivated using the mixture ...

While the complexity of modern engineering systems is significantly mitigated by modularization, the number of modules (e.g., line-replaceable units) can still be large enough to pose a challenge of developing a coordinated maintenance policy that accounts for the coupling among individual maintenance schedules for each module. This paper focuses on opportunistic maintenance, induced failure, and other coupling mechanisms caused by competing risk phenomena. Modeling the maintenance process of an ...

Pharmacological activation of autophagy is becoming an attractive strategy to induce the selective degradation of aggregate-prone proteins. Recent evidence also suggests that autophagy impairment may underlie the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations in the gene encoding SOD1 (superoxide disumutase 1) trigger familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), inducing its misfolding and aggregation and the progressive loss of motoneurons. It is still under debate whether autophagy ...

Background . Variation in the prevalence of sarcopenia is related to the skeletal muscle index cutoff points applied. The objective of this pilot study was to examine the recruitment process for testing different sarcopenia definitions (ASMI cutoffs) in older Mexican adults. It explored whether the prevalence of sarcopenia decreased by applying ethnic- and gender-specific, DXA-derived appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI)-cutoff points in the definitions, as well as some associated factors in a ...

Although Entamoeba histolytica is one of the most prevalent intestinal parasites, how the different strains of this species are distributed all over the world and how different genotypes are associated with the infection outcome are yet to be fully understood. Recently, the use of a number of molecular markers has made the characterization of several genotypes in those regions with high incidence of amoebiasis possible. This work proposes the first genealogy of E. histolytica, with an haplotype ...

Abstract Disturbance of endoplasmic reticulum ( ER ) proteostasis is a common feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ). Protein disulfide isomerases ( PDI s) are ER foldases identified as possible ALS biomarkers, as well as neuroprotective factors. However, no functional studies have addressed their impact on the disease process. Here, we functionally characterized four ALS ‐linked mutations recently identified in two major PDI genes, PDIA 1 and PDIA 3/ ER p57. Phenotypic screening in zebrafish revealed ...

The biosynthesis of insect juvenile hormone (JH) and its neuroendocrine control are attractive targets for chemical control of insect pests and vectors of disease. To facilitate the molecular study of JH biosynthesis, we analyzed ESTs from the glands producing JH, the corpora allata (CA) in the cockroach Diploptera punctata, an insect long used as a physiological model species and compared them with ESTs from the CA of the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Anopheles albimanus. The predicted genes were ...

Results showed that the most resistant provenance corresponded to Bolaro ...

In this paper, two control laws are proposed and applied in a model for a continuous Microbial Electrochemical Cells system. The used model is based on mass balances describing the behavior of substrate consumption, microbial growth, competition between anodophilic and methanogenic microorganisms for the carbon source in the anode, hydrogen generation, and electrical current production. The main control objective is to improve the electrical current generated and thus the production of bio-hydrogen ...

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a severe and extraordinarily lethal infectious disease, has emerged as a widespread public health crisis among predominantly vulnerable populations in several countries of Latin America, particularly evident in northern Mexico. Historically, RMSF has gained less attention than many other tropical infectious diseases, resulting in insufficient allocations of resources and development of capabilities for its prevention and control in endemic regions. We argue that ...

Nowadays there are hundreds of learning objects on the Internet; these objects are developed under e-Learning specifications and standards, such as SCORM and IMS Content Package. These standards allow the use of learning objects in learning management systems. However, learning environments and learning objects must have been built to the same standards. In this sense, ...
